What should I be looking for when doing slipper and pad maintenance?

Yesterday the slipper clutch pads on the slash had given up. They were the stock ones which are 7 years old.

What are the go to or the best for pads? Graphite, Carbon, or Aluminum pads? I seen hot racing makes all of the above and traxxas only does graphite ones.

Are the friction pads kind of like brake pads on real cars?

When I mean given up, one of the pads just fell apart into pieces.

Just rotate pads, new unused side outside
