ok, I got my Hardcore tranny case this week and I've been working on transferring components this morning. I am swapping top shaft gearing and primaries with RRP stuff. First thing I encountered was how tough it was to get the bearings into there place. I just dremeled it a tad.. no problem. Is this fairly normal? Ok, so I went to put the cases together with all the components and they wouldn't fit flush so I took it apart and fiddled with a couple things. I did notice that there were 2 shims between the primary forward gear and the 1st gear spur (even though the Traxxas blow up manual only shows 1). So I took 1 of the shims out. I also readjusted the drive hub clutch with the drive shaft. After putting it all back together it seemed to fit fine and everything rotated freely.... untill I tightened down the tranny case screws... now the top shaft would rotate nice in one direction (clockwise) but was real real tight in the opposite. So I took it apart again and took out the other shim between the primary forward and 1st gear spur... Reassembled and everything seems perfect. Everything is nice and secure and everything rotates freely. Am I going to encounter any excess wear since I no longer have a shim between the forward primary and 1st gear spur? The forward primary is RRP steel and I believe it's now in contact with the 1st gear spur's bearing case (which is probably stainless steel I would imagine)

sorry for the long post but I thought I'd give as much details as possible

The HC Trans case is a great case to get if your after the "Look".
I purchased the same one for my CyberMaxx and had the same issues you are having. After hours of tweaking I decided the stock case would be a safer choice for me.

I would assume that you will be OK with no shims. Shims are just that, shims. If you need them use them if not don't. You may want to put it all together dry and run it in with your drill. Open it back up and see if you have any shavings inside. If so find where they came from and deal with it.

Sorry I don't have any better answers.

Thanks Eddy. I figured it'd probably be ok but I thought I'd get a 2nd, more experienced opinion before I ran it.

Hey Eddy,
I never thought of running the transmission with a drill before I put it back on the truck! That's a new one, and a great idea. I'll have to use that one next time!! Thanks!!

I use my dremel so it gets up to speeds that it would see. Ever have a trans shift into second in your hand???

As for your trans case, I had the same kind of problems... but it was Racers Edge. I figure it was due to sub-par millwork, but I guess not! I bought mine for $89 new from lightening hobby. I thought maybe that's where the other $60 or so was going with the hardcore case.

Anyway, my binding was on the RRP 2speed top shaft. I actually had to carefully dremmel the collar where the bearing rides a little bit. Actually, I put the shaft in my dremmel and held a file against it. Little trick my dad showed me when he needed a shoulder bolt and all he had were bolts and extra nuts... Anyway, I took about 1mm off and it fit perfect after that. Although, unlike you, I didn't think far enough ahead on the bearings to attempt to sand the hole out a little bit. I just took a wood dowel and hamerred the bastards in! A little later (about 4 gallons of 21 bashing later), I had a bearing toast out on me... that was a PITA to get out!

Anyway, aftermarket is aftermarket. If you get it to fit and get it to work, then just hope after futzing with it that it still will last twice as long as the stock parts.

The only other side effect I noticed of running an al trans case was increased servo glitching. Hope you don't find the same problem.

I've heard about the glitching as well. I guess the more allum youhave the greater the chances are huh?.?... I just sprayed plasti dip on over my steering servo bracket so it wouldn't touch the metal casing... I did like 4 coats, but I think I'll do a couple more once I tear the truck down and rebuild it after I get my diffs and diff cases ( and loctite everything)

My top shaft was perfect with the HC case but it seemed like the fitting for the drive shaft bearing on the brake side of the case wouldn't let it slide in enough causing it to bind when tightened down. Actually, I think i sanded it a hair too much cuz it goes in quite a bit easier than before ( of course i was pounding it with the end of a ratched and it still wouldn't go ), but it's not so loose that it falls out if you shake it or even try to tap it out. The only bearing fittings I didn't sand were the top shaft ones actually. Everything feels fine though, except my spur seems to wobble just a tad. Maybe 1/32 of an ince. I'm using the rc solutions 52T big block spur with stock slipper. But I think my slipper is slightly out of wack from when the original Maxx got ran over. think I'll get a new one here pretty soon
