this is cross post that I replied in the nitro engine section.
Seeing as the tr-15 gets a bad rep. I thought I'd repost here.
new to nitro, but not rc, i bought the tr-15 suburu rally for my first nitro considering it was much cheaper than the landmax2 version. After having the same front suspension/bulkhead problems that masterbeav had, i made some minor modification and added some titanium rods, that seemed to have solved the problem so far. The a-arms still pop out of the ball joints after a big hit, but the rest doesn't bend or break anymore.
I also had/have problems with the gs-15 engine. After mucho stalling for no good reason, and horrible acceleration, and a 1/8 buggy still out of reach finacially. I decided to nickel & dime the thing into a worthy rally. I added a two needle carb., better air filter, thicker fuel tubing, tighter clutch springs, metal disk brake, bearings all around, stiffer servo saver spring and better wheels and tire combo.
so I thought she would run like a champ, and the chassis and suspension does really well when the gs-15 runs. But I am still plagued with stalling and tuning problems.
So at the moment, heres my consesus/problems to date:
with the upgrades, the chassis really performs like a rally car, full on throttle 4-wheel drifts, brake induced oversteer, and somewhat predictable handling over minor jumps and bumps. In the dirt, its a blast and maybe not 1/8 buggy performance, but its fun.
Problems: after adding bearings, the brake is too weak. one of the differentials has tight spot making it a little twitchy when off throttle, and unless drifting, it has a horrible turning radius.
But onto the real problems: the engine, i don't have much expieriance, but i would rate this engine as horrible. The car is difficult to tune, and is two entirely different beasts from a full tank of gas to a half tank. Since I love the way it drives, I plan on sticking with the chassis, but will be upgrading the motor, pipe and tank. I'd like to ditch the ball connectors for the front suspension and design/modify my own solution.
Overall, I'm still under budget for an inferno 7.5 w/o engine+ and have a very fast, fun rally car, but if I did it over I would just buy the landmax and upgrade from there.
I wonder if the gs-21 is plagued with the same problems as the gs-21?
