what're your opinions on pinching sleeves? when, where, why, and how should you do it? i see a lot of people at the LHS pinching sleeves every time the engine dies on 'em a couple times. my opinion is that too many people jump the gun on doing this and they're weakening the sleeves. what do you think? :ponder2:

Every time the engine dies interesting, I repinch my P&S when it is worn and will not provide compression. usualy after 5-7 gallons of fuel.

i like OS Rocket and you could try RayRacing they are good also

I guess just when it gets hard to start and all and it cuts out. Or if you can turn the flywheel over easily.

I heard OSRocket and Rayaracing are good.

I had OS Rocket do my piston/sleeve on my old novarossi ns12s3 (think that's the kind it was...it was a high end engine), he did a really good job, and it was only like $15 or something

I run mine till they won't run anymore, then I pinch them myself. I can usually get 2-3 pinches out of them before its' time for a new piston/sleeve.

I've had OS rocket do 2 of my engines, with great results. When its time I'll use him again.

After break-in and I'll probably do it again soon...it's about 9 gallons on it now.....I like Ray's work....

what is pinching a sleeve? seems like pinching means making it smaller, but i know thats not the case, is it?

pinching is making it smaller, in a way. the fit gets loose between the piston and sleeve and you compress the sleeve with a special tool to make it tight again. where i'm at, it seems like this is the new fad to make everything better without actually learning how to tune an engine. engine dies, they say "uh-oh you better pinch the sleeve!". is it just here? or is everybody doing it.

I only do it when the compression is so low, that I can roll it over thru compression with no effort at all.

How you do guys pinch a sleeve? Do you need a speacial tools for that? Thank you.

yes, you can either risk ruining your sleeve by buying a little thing on ebay for around $15 that you clamp on it and it resizes (not recommended) or you can send it to osrocket or rayaracing ( www.rayaracing.com ) you send your sleeve to them and then they will resize it with very expensive equipment for about $15.

Yeah you can do it your self but I would not risk it, you can over tighten it, or strip the screw I just send it to someone how knows what they are doing

Hey now, I'm no expert, lol. 'Tis why I only pinch my own sleeves. I don't want to be liable for someones' $80+ or so assembly. (And yes, I have messed up more than one of my own sleeves... It's TOO easy to do, and there really is no way to relieve the pinch... It's a one-way process).

It can be done by yourself, but you run a tremendous risk of messing up a sleeve. That's why I recommend someone use a service like rayaracing or osrocket. Good quality results for about the same price.

hmm. i email and tried to call rayaracing is he still doing this service or should i just buy the pincher and doem myself, jared

Here's OS rockets site: http://www.osrocketracing.com/
And, rayaracing: http://www.rayaracing.com/orderresize.htm

I ran about 12 gallons through my OS 21 RG, then it started dieing for no reason and blowing out glowplugs. The compression was non-existant, but it kind had been non-existent from gallon 9-12... I think it just got so bad, that when the engine got hot (around 240-250), it would just flame out.

I sent mine to OSRocket and regretted not asking for a mild pinch. If you have a pullstart and it's a 21 or larger, ask for a mild pinch and let him know you have a pullstart. Throw a note in the box or whatever. If he over-pinches it for you, it will relieve it if you pay shipping. (I found that out after I spun my engine for an hour on a drill)

I've run about 4 gallons through that engine since then (last season) and it still has a tendency to get stuck at TDC when it cools.

I believe it's $25 shipped. I sent mine on a Monday and got it back on a Friday. This time of year, you should get the same results.
