Good morning everyone, a few years ago I converted this tmaxx to brushless and now I’m wanting to go back nitro. The guy i got the tmaxx from originally had a .15 pro engine in the box of parts he gave me which is what I was trying to use, However, after trying to install it and it not fitting I did some research and found out this tmaxx has a big block chassis. What would be the best option for converting this back to nitro?

When I converted it to brushless I took off a OS .21 and sold it.

My thoughts were just getting another OS .21 or buying a tmaxx 2.5 chassis and 3.3 engine.

Welcome to the site. I'm getting ready to pull my .15 and 2.5 maxx's out.

If the diff and tranny been upgraded id go o.s. big block. If money is tight maybe an sh or lrp engine.

If you go back to factory chassis, id go 3.3 chassis as your more likely to find an aftermarket body for that one then the shorter 2.5.

If you go 3.3, get an o.s. carb to wake it up. Dynamite also has a 3.3 equivalent drop in.

If you buy stock parts jennys below is a favorite spot here. If you buy directly from them on their website and off ebay its a little cheaper also.

Thanks!

Also i am struggling to remember how to put the engine mounts back on this chassis. I think once I get an engine that works for the chassis it will be more clear. I’ll post a picture below of the mounts to see if you have any tips

I don't think those are stock mounts from what I remember. Then again, its been years since I had my 2.5 T-MAXX.

I was correct. These are the T-MAXX engine mounts.
You’re correct, I do have one of those mounts but because this is the big block chassis the stock mount is too small which is why I have these. I’m thinking once I have an actual big block engine in hand these mounts will make more sense on how to install them

Sounds cool 😁. If I get one I'm getting an E Maxx, I've always liked the thought of one. Even have a poster somewhere. I say poster, it's really just an old cover from a Traxxas Magazine with a bunch of old models from 2008 or something like that. Fell off cleanly one day and I never wanted to tape it

After visiting local hobby shop and talking to them I decided to convert back to the 3.3 chassis and just get a 3.3. The guys were telling me that big block engines are not made like they used to be meaning the engine mount holes are in the same spot as small blocks that way they mount to chassis without having to mod them. Since my chassis is from so long ago they told me I’m going to have some problems trying to fit a new era big block on this chassis and getting it to lineup with the transmission.

They told me the big block I had was old school and had completely different mounting holes to work with my chassis and unless I find that exact engine it’s gonna be tough and could run up costs. Also they said I could run into problems with mounting an exhaust without hitting the rear shocks since I no longer have the pipe I had.

If you guys have any input on that let me know.

Also if you guys agree with me converting back, should I find a used 3.3 tmaxx or should I go with all new parts for my truck. Either option would be about the same price, I’m leaning on going new so I don’t have to worry about any hidden problems on a used truck.

Well after getting a second opinion at another hobby shop the guys said the other hobby shop didnt know what they were talking about. So I am keeping the big block chassis and I have an LRP .21 engine on the way. I was putting all the old nitro parts back on my chassis and seen that I have no designated spot for the throttle linkage post that comes on the stock tmaxx (pics below). What will my options be on installing my throttle linkage for the slide carb on the LRP 21?

Me personally, id put the new motor in and have wire to make my own linkage and drill a hole for it.

thanks. You mean drill a hole in the chassis for the post?
That's what I would do. Remember measure twice cut once. Use a punch or hammer a point at ground zero so it doesn't wonder. If its titanium enjoy the spark show. 🫡

So I got the new engine in, waiting on a new clutch kit to come in since the one I have is not so great of shape.

The second pic shows the clearance I have between the engine shaft and transmission. The engine I got is the LRP 21 and it uses the screw on the end of the shaft to hold the clutch components on. As you can see it’s a tight fit and with that screw it hits the transmission. I used an E clip in to hold the clutch components on instead. Will I run into issues doing that? I know traxxas engines use E clips so I thought I’d try.
