1st off I live in Ohio and damm its been a cold past 2months. Colder then normal.

Whats your Av. gas bill if you use gas.

mine was 375 this month... Ouch. It is a 2story 5rooms.
and I keep the basment warm also..

Just wondering what Everyone else av gas gost in the north.

Months like this make me miss FLA.

Holy-ass dude, $375!!! Our avg. gas bill in the winter is about $110, our last bill was for $135. The only thing we have that's gas in our house is the heat. On top of that our electricity bill runs about another $110.
In the summer electricity is the same, and gas is $10.
We've got a small house... my buddies mom live in a house that's about 8500 sq ft heated, and her electricity bill is normally around $675/month. I'd hate to see her gas bill.

My girlfriends bill was over $200 last month and they keep it at about 70. My bill was $0.00 :D My apartment complex pays for gas so I crank it up to whatever I want.

I also live in ohio and your right it has been very cold. But i liked the snowdays i had. But i over herd my stepdad talking about the gas bill and he said it was $375 just like you. Thats is way to much. He said he is going to change to some other company.

That's exactly the reason that the next house me buy will HOPEfully have electric heat. If not, when we build our house it most definately will. When we live in our apartment we only had electricity, no gas. All year round no matter how high the AC or heat was cranked up our power bill was no more than $115 bucks. And that was a BIG apartment.

I dont see how ELECTRIC heat would be any diff.
It would take more Electricity to keep warm also wouldnt it?

I mean when Its cold its cold. The electric heater would have to do just as much work and would kick on and off just as much as a gas one would.

Holy chit those are some high gas bills. Reminds me of my fathers electric bill every month due to his mechanics dream garage and HUGE air compressor.

I have a good size house and it gets cold here in NM in the high desert but nothing compared to you poor shleps on the East COast. Actually, Gas prices are going up some all over the USA and especially for buisness.

I'll have to check my average bill and get back to ya bro

2000 sf house in sunny Ca and my bill was 475.00 last month.
Needless to say I unplugged the hot tub last week. That should save me 200.00 or so this month.

Don't bitch about expensive cost of living unless you live in the SF Bay aria we are the #1 in the nation.

I live near Pittsburgh and it's been cold as hell hear too.I own a 2 story 3 bedroom home and my gas bill a this past December was 409 and some change.I bought a digital thermostat after that and this month my bill was about 330$.I'm not sure if the new stat had much to do with it but if it did I say it's worth the 50$ for the digi unit.

Ya I'm actually gona look at new furnaces. I bet this sucker is as old as the house. and you know back then They wernt as efficent as the new ones. new ones are like 90% efficent. I bet my old one is 50% efficent.

Ya I'm deff thinking a Digital Thermo also.

You should check and see if your gas company has a budget plan, I am on a budget plan with my gas company and i pay $75 year round, and then every year they re-evaluate what I used for the year and almost always, I get a credit on my last statement and then they adjust the monthly payment, I have never had to pay more than $90 per month for gas, before that the winter months payments were $150 to $250 depending on the weather outside.

Wow. I only live like 35 or so miles away from you, and the highest bill this winter was $155. I also have a 2000sf house, 1 story with 2 adults and 2 kids. No hot tub though. Although we plan on putting a Jacuzzi in the back. Guess I will have to research what impact it will have on my PG&E.

I am in Western Mass and live in a fairly small 1 bedroom and it has been between 150-200 each month during the winter and 70-100 during the summer with the AC.

Also I was always under the myth that gas was cheaper but it has been just as if not more expensive in the same size apt I was in before so I don't think it makes that much difference.

I think it mostly has to do with how good the insulation is on the building than anything.

Ya I dont want to do the budget plan. cuz I pay like 10bucks in the spring.summer.fall.

As for Insulation.. our place has Brand new insulation blew in all the walls, etc.. Brand new roof and all new siding. just Old windows is whats killing me. and A not so efficent furnace. It deff Heats up the house and gets It toasty(hot enough air you can't sit right in front of a vent long or your dripping,,lol)

Damn People Do you guys leave the heater on 24-7? I live in an apartment and gas is paid for that has gas heater but I NEVER turned it on . I have lil electric heater that I turn on when it gets really cold or my son says ot gets cold but other then that we use sweats or a blanket. You guys are too much. My parents house they barely turn their heater on and their gas bill is like 60 bucks 80 during the cold season. I wish I could complain about my gas bill for a house I have yet to own!!!

Well In my house the gas bill for a month is around $600 its a 2 story house and the basement is heated aswell... and we turn it off during the day when my parents go to work and I go to school and its set at 64 over night and when were in the house its at 67...

My folks gas bill (HUGE old two story house) was around $380-$450 a month. It had an older gas furnace in it.

This year he got a little out of the retirment fund, and bought a new furnace 6k out of pocket.

The old furnace was 65% efficient. You couldn't touch the exhaust it was way too hot. (lots of heat taken off out the chimmney). THe new furnace is 90 some thing % efficient. It doesn't have an exhaust pipe. It has an exhaust tube(plastic). No heat is being wasted by this guy.

He also got a new digital thermostat when they installed the new furnace. Together they save on average of $100-$150 a month.

Suggestions that make a huge difference.

Digital thermostat: It can turn down the heat when you leave for work, and turn it up 5 minutes before you get home. It can turn down the heat when you are asleep, and turn it back up rioght before you wake up. Estimate maybe 10-20% savings. You can pick em up from $50-$100 at any home store.

Plastic the windows:
My place here is cheap to heat, I use power. the bill without plastic on thw windows $140, bill with plastic $110

Foundation: Close the vents if it has any. If it is pourous, or not sealed well, plastic around it. Big difference.

Caulking: Anywhere you got a draft, of a wire/cable going through the wall, caulk the hell out of it. I'm a caluking nazi lol.

FSTBDY, you;re right your windows will kill ya. I would definetaly get some plastic up if you haven't already. Also check out the attic if havent already done that too. A good layer of blown in will really help up there.

I can just imagine without all the new siding and insulation you had done. I bet the bill bfore that was crazy scary.

Ya the attic is nice and Insulated. We blew front the bottoms up. The walls are packed. The House Deff Stays warm. Just these OLD single pain glass windows.. and olf furnace..

You know for what i spend on RC crap. and my real race car crap I could replace all my windows and get a new furnace. lol..

goes to show where my priorities are..... Gota have fun.

Ya my windows are plasticed... I should rip it all down and seal em lik eyou said. I was gona but never got around to it.

Hahah, Me I'm the same way. Getting me to og o outside. Or even get anything done inside is tough. Once I do it I do it right.. its jus the getting offf my butt lol.
