Hi guys I after some advice, recently purchased my 1st rc nitro, a thunder tiger tomahawk. After initional setup problems mainly with the carb the car is now running ok. my problem is it only runs with the shell off! as soon as the shell is put on it cuts out almost instantly, also if I block the air flow to the filter it cut out also so its obviously an air flow issue. anyone ant ideas on how or what to do to make it run with the shell on?

man thanks

This is what you have...

This is it with the shell on, right?...

If that's the filter you're using and that's the same lid, it's possible you're choking the filter intake with the roof when you're putting it on.
Obviously it will stall when the air supply is cut off, so consider getting a filter that breaths from the sides or adding an elbow to tilt the existing filter away from the roof.

hi thanks for the reply, the pic with the shell on is correct but my air filter is nothing like the 1 in the picture. mine is the 1 in the picture

Well, that's the side breather I was referring to, so being choked by the roof is not the problem. Is there a chance you're blocking the exhaust while putting on the body? That, too, will cut the engine.
It's extremely unlikely that the lid has anything to do with the engine quitting. I'm guessing it may be a tuning issue where it just doesn't want to idle on its own without being blipped. See if it will sit and idle without touching the radio.

It actually could be the body thats causing this. Do you have the window cut out on the right side (viewed from front)? The contour of that body is going to touch (or be very close to) the top portion of the filter. Looks like it would ride right along the curve of the filter. If touching or very close to touching, could easily starve the engine of air by creating suction against the body. Cut out that window and maybe drill several eighth inch holes in the body above where the filter sits. Or just cut out a strip of the body there.

The side breather could not choke out since it draws air from all sides.
Even if it wasn't getting any air from the top and trying to pull all its air from the bottom of the filter?

I've gotta side with tuning issue, especially if the air cleaner and body are factory stock.
You should cut out a ventilation hole in the front windshield as mentioned, if you don't have one already, then tune.
I'm guessing Its probably running rich and it gets worse when the body is put on

I'm guessing that the time needed to fit and secure the body is enough time for the engine to choke up if it's not tuned properly.

Thanks for the replys guys! cut an additional whole in the shell today and it ran ok with the shell on. few tuning tweeks to do but it runs with the shell on now :thumbs-up:
