Thinking about crawling

well considering i have a crap job, I'm probably going to go for the cheapest stuff, but i can always upgrade. i think ill go with the sidewinder ESC and 55T lather motor then, but i can always upgrade in the future. What do you recommend for servos and batteries?
oh an i just saw on ebay a team novak 55 turn lathe motor, is that a good one, its 28 canadian
And i also found this, is this any good, its a 55T lathe motor with a rooster ESC

Thats the one i use, and am very happy with it.
 
I reccomend either the HiTec 645 MG for $25 shipped on ebay, or the TowerPro MG995 for about $12 shipped. I bought some TowerPro servos because they were cheap to experiment with. I stripped out a servo arm and had to run the TowerPro by default, and it has been a great lil servo so far. And since you can buy two for the price of the Hitec, even if something happens in six months it's a great lil servo. But I've been running one hard for about a month with no problem.

The Hitec produces 133 oz/in of torque
The Towerpro produces 205 oz/in of torque

I can't find the post I typed about the batteries. I must not have hit submit. Don't buy the stick packs of sub C batteries like you've been looking at. You need to get a saddle pack to mount on the front axle. Don't worry, they're quite cheap. The biggest thing that keeps the axial from being capable right out of the box is a stick pack battery. On a crawler you need the center of gravity as low as possible, and you want the weight down close to the axles. A stick pack mounted on top of the chassis is a huge handicap to crawling, because it mounts the heaviest part on your truck in the highest position on the truck. So, you can buy a saddle pack from The Crawler Store for around 20 bucks, and mount them down on the front axle. That will probably give you a 2 to 1 advantage over someone with a stock axial, at least.

The number of cells that you need will depend on the motor and ESC combo that you decide on. I highly reccomend the Novak Rooster combo, and you can run LiPo with it as well. You can mount a LiPo cell down on the front axle, but you will want to start out with nimh saddle packs first I'm sure because of the money.

Okay, so i should go with that one combo with the 55T lathe motor with a rooster ESC. Then for the Servo ill probably go with that towerpro, ill go with those Nimh battery that goes in the front. Ill be going to my LHS to see what kind of stuff they have there cause i dont really like Ebay much cause i have to wait lol.

Oh and what kind of batteries would i need for the 55t lathe motor with the rooster ESC, like the voltage. Also what kind of charger would be good. Like are there any good combos were they might have 2 batteries and one charger or something like that, cause id like to get two batteries and have one as a spare type of thing. but i think for now i might get a regular stick pack just to see if i even like crawling, but I'm sure i will, but i can always upgrade and buy lipos and stuff like that

those saddle packs are only 20 bucks, and will make all the difference in the world compared to the stick pack. The stick pack is one thing that I would strongly advise against. It's like putting touring car tires on a Revo and trying to race off-road. You could probably save about 200 by buying the stuff online compared to locally, but if you have the money then that might not be important. I reccomend the dynamite prophet chargers for nimh. If you're going with LiPo, then you need to be ready to spend $100 on the charger (at least) and another hundred for a couple of batteries. You could buy a prophet charger and 2 saddle packs for about $60.
 
Alright, ill save some more money for the saddle packs. Good I'm pretty much set now...now its time to wait for my pay checks to come in lol. but with the saddle packs how do you put them in the front axle, i saw in a picture they used velcro but where do i get those little platforms that they sat on

hell my lipo and charger together were only like $80. and i didnt even burn a quarter pack the entire comp on sat.
 
So if i buy all these electronics would i have to buy wires because i was looking at a 55T lathe motor on ebay and it didnt seem to have any wires, so if anyone can clear that up for me id appreciate it
 
mine came with wires, i might be wrong but I'm pretty sure they come with wires, the pic of it was probably just cut off for some reason. but agian i might be wrong
 
yeah i saw on another picture the wires, is that hard soldering the stuff? What i mean is do they have instructions on this like were the wires go? And another thing, do all of these electronics go together, like do the batteries have a connecer that will fit in the ESC or whatever it plugs into, same with the servo, or would i have to buy different end plugs that would fit in the ESC?

Well I'm thinking of getting the Novak Rooster with 55T lathe motor, but for the receiver i dont now yet, if you recommend any receiver i will look into it
Oh wait wait, i have an old nitro truck downstairs with the reciever and remotet still working, can i stull use that, its got like a crystal and 2 other plug in spots were the throttle servo and steering servo would go, would this work?

Yep, the first reciever i used in mine was a stock t-maxx one. I'm now using a Spektrum dx3.0

The rooster crawler system is what I'm currently using. Its easy to get set up, if you have any questions about setup when u get it, just ask.
 
You will need to solder a deans connector on your ESC. Those saddle packs that I linked you to already come with a Dean's connector. You will melt a tamiya connector with the current draw from these crawlers. If you're scared of soldering, there are a lot of members on here that will help you, or you could ask the guys at the local hobby shop to do it. They may charge a small fee, but all of them that I've been to or had people go to, just did it for free. It only takes about a minute start to finish to solder a connector and melt the shrink wrap.

Any radio system will work as long as the transmitter and receiver are on the same frequency. For a stock axial you only need 2 channels.
 
Okay, good, I'm stopping by at my LHS to see what they have,havent been there for a while so ill see if they can show me stuff with soldering or some tips. But i have soldered before, but i dont want to mess this up but yeah ill try
