In case anyone doesn't understand how powerful the river can be... this is a F-250 Superduty, buried in river rock.

I was driving down this dirt road that connected two highways. It was only about a half mile distance. This road was also the entrance to an active coal mine site, just north, and uphill from the road.

It was like 2am. I was in my mom's Ford Escort wagon. I have been down this road 100's of times. That night, a retention pond at the mine had washed out in a huge rain storm. I was tooling along about 30mph when all of a sudden my headlights illuminate rapids rushing across the road. It was about 20 feet deep, as the road dipped down there. The front of the car was in the water by the time I stopped. I thought I was a goner. It was the scariest raging water I have ever seen, toppling 2' diameter trees as I sat there watching it.

That one is very sad. We've had a few very bad floods since we've moved to vt. I'm not trying to compare but I definitely understand that mother nature is not one to mess with. I feel very bad for everyone that was impacted and lost loved ones :(

Most people underestimate how fast water is moving at the best of times. When you get flood conditions all bets are off. I am amazed that so many people think they can make it.

Wow so I mentioned this and realized today is the anniversary of those floods here.

Just saw that on the news.
Yeah my town made national news also. It was crazy. A friend watched her house get taken by the river with everything in it. I'm lucky I guess our house is at some elevation. But maybe not out of touch. Two of my close neighbors had problems. Irene in '11 was a bad one too.

I feel so bad for those people in Texas. I remember not knowing the best way home and how to make sure everyone was safe.

I had a bad basement flood. Almost to 1st floor. Business too. Even when the rushing water doesn't trash the place, the water damage, mold... def will!

We didn't lose everything but was still a terrible time. Roads all closed etc. Chaos.

I can't imagine how these poor folks are feeling right now! ☹️

I hope FEMA acts a bit quicker moving forward too.

Flash floods are no joke. We were driving down a dry river bed in Afghanistan and all of a sudden water started gushing towards us. We got out of the middle just in time and some of our vehicles got stranded right in the middle. There was no water here just minutes before.

I feel so bad for those families affected by the floods. Rushing water is so scary and it doesn't take much water to lift a car either, I found that out first hand with family years ago trying to cross a flooded road. I hope families there get the aid they need soon.
