hi guys need some help my t maxx 3.3 is not shifting its stuck in first, tune is fine it just stopped shifting I've notice that when i roll it forward when not started there is a slightly strange grinding noise very slight is my tranny damaged thanks

You need to open the tranny up and see if there's anything damaged inside. It does seem intimidating to pull the tranny out but there's no other way to diagnose it. There should be some vids on Youtube to give you a visual. Hope this helps, Steve

My dad just did this 2 days ago as I watched, it's not bad at all plus you can easily find an "exploded view" of the tranny online to see how it goes together. Inside are several gears stacked on each other, 2 sets. The smaller set has one gear thats quite thick and in that is your 2 speed spool. This has a spring and small metal rod in it which will spread out at a high RPM, you will see it. This is what control the shifting and also holds the set screw you turn when adjusting it. These do wear out as his did awhile back and needed replaced. Check that and of course all the teeth on all the gears, if you find no damage visually I would say replace that shifter piece, it's fairly cheap too.

Thanks guys I found 2 small pins just flying around inside tranny and cannot find where they came from I've checked all the gears and their pins are still intact these pins are Smooth one end and are kind of rough the other end can't find them on exploded view drawing either kind of strange

Only pins I know of in there slide through gears and through the shafts. Sounds like it was chewed in half but of course I can't see.... you pulled everything out?

The 3.3 primary shift clutch anchors to the shaft with a pin (check the silver clutch thats inside the 2nd largest gear on the middle shaft for a broken pin). Broken pin = no shift.

All the gears are still attached to the shaft s with black screw pins these pins are silver and rough at one end as if they push into something so far then stop if you know what I mean And they don't look broken either

Is this a brand new tmaxx or have u had it awhile?

The pin I was pointing to anchors part # 5390 (2 speed clutch) to the shaft not a gear. You won’t know if it’s broken unless you disassemble the gears from the shaft to have a look. Part # 5394X also uses a silver pin to anchor the gear to the shaft but it would be easy to determine if it’s broken, the gear would spin on the shaft.
No other silver pins in the 3.3 transmission, so they are ghosts or you haven’t found the missing/broken pin yet.

Post a pic of the pins if you can't figure it out.

There are 2 small pins inside the primary 2nd gear hub. But I have never seen them become loose unless the inside of the hub is destroyed.

thanks for your help i think it could br those 2 inside 5384 i haven't had it apart again but i have the pins how do i upload a pic on here to show you

Easiest thing to do is make a photo bucket and upload to photo bucket then embed the image via the image code you can get off photobucket. You can upload images to your profile here but it requires resizing and there is a limited amount of space

you can load the pics on to your computer and click on the paper clip on the post menu then upload your pic to the post that way. i would take your tranny apart again and see if the pins are in side the gear. if not you may have to buy a new 2 speed gear. only around 5 bucks.

link did not work. did you go to browse and pick the pic then click upload after clicking on the paper clip?

they look like the shifting pins. check your gear and see if there is any damage. there most likely is damage to the plastic where they are suppose to be inserted into. if it is damaged the part is cheap and your hobby shop most likely will have the part so you dont have to wait for it to be shipped to you.let us know how it works out.

well mechanically speaking, usually a steel pin or rod with one end burred like that is supposed to be pressed into plastic or something else malleable as to not move. I just saw my dad rebuild his tmaxx tranny and I did not notice anything that resembled that but tomorrow I will ask about it if you havent figured it out yet.

"Shifting pins" or whatever they are called, if I'm not mistaken must be able to pivot to "swing" outwards once a certain RPM is reached via centrifugal force. Did you happen to check the inside of the transmission housing for possibly a place they should fit? I'd bet $1 they press into something such as plastic and are not supposed to move =P
