That is no where near operating temps. ARe you sure that is the temp? Where are you temping?
 
ha. i know it isnt, but i was told for the 1st runs it may not get all the way up there, and its the hottest its ever gotten. ill try to get it up some more tomorrow. unless someone says i should lean it up and get more temp

you gotta take the temps at the top of the head of the engine , where the glow plug is.

I already said lean it out.A cold break in isnt good for the mill.You NEED to get those temps up.
 
With that, you should not need the sock. What percentage fuel? How long do you allo the engine to warm up? I personally like to run it at low RPM's for a few laps around the track or street.. You will feel the engine response change as it warms up. After warm up, temp it at the head.

whoa whoa whoa. how exactly am i supposed to do this? everything on breaking the engine is says to run it 3-4 minutes. is this from the time you start it or from the time you get it to temperature? i took the temp today at the glow plug and its a lot hotter there. it was 150-160 today.
 
Give it a bit of time. After running through a 125cc tank, I lean it a bit to coax it up to higher temps. I typically don't hit 190-200 until tank 3, but I typically hit 150 by the end of tank 2. I also never run an "idle" tank. I slowly get on the gas the first time it starts. I don't go more than 1/4 - 1/2 throttle, but I do get it rolling. And I ease on the throttle. I don't snap it to 50% and hold it there. I ease up and ease back down constantly.
 
I do mine pretty close to how Olds does too. Some engines I will heat gun up to about 170 before I start it for the first time especially if it has a super tight pinch. I had to do that on my 3.3 Jato.....heck the starter motor would not turn the sucker over until I did. Quarter throttle first tank, varying speed slowly Half throttle second tank again varying speeds slowly. If you need to lean it to keep it running reliably and get the temp up... do it....If you don't get the temp up you will wear the piston to the sleeve....not the sleeve to the piston. With that you get a low life engine....or one that does not like to run once you get it warmed-up. I use a modified version of HPI break-in for most engines and it seems to work pretty good for me so far. My biggest thing is making sure you get temps up and the piston is set back to the bottom when you let it cool between cycles. But seriously TEMP is very important.

all i could get it to do today was rev up,revdown,rev up, rev down....without me touching it.
 
k good..i thought it may be to lean but then i bogged it down with richness

i just went out for another run, and i richened it up just slightly to see if it would solve the revving issue..but it just got worse, which i dont understand because at the setting i just had it it didnt ever do that before.
 
The richening-up on it's own is pretty normal. It will do that until it gets fully broken in. That is one of the reasons you lean out slightly after every tank or so. If you didn't, it eventually just would not run it would slobber so much. Just keep at it, takes a little patience and time but will pay off. In break-in I run slow lazy circles and figure 8's and I like a air brush line painted on the pavement after a tank. If I can get it to do that and still get a bit warm 170-190....I am happy. Getting plenty of oil and heat to break it in for a hopefully long life.
