I'm looking to get into the r/c game. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this, so cut me some slack

I'm looking for something basic that can be upgraded or with adjustability. i'll be using it mainly on the street, like infront of my house to goof around and what not.

i was looking at the HPI Nitro RS4 3 18SS+. do you guys think this would be a good kit for me? i believe it requires assembly which I'm fine with. i would need the radio and gas... what else would i need? would you even recommend this for me?

i was also looking at the Ofna 1/8 Ultra GTP RTR. its RTR so it comes pre-built correct? it also comes with the radio which is good since I'm still new to this so i dont really know too much about it. would i be able to upgrade any of the parts once i learn a little more? could i use any remote for it even though it already comes with one?

do you guys have any more recommendations?

also, i want nitro and on-road... no off-road. thanks in advance :)

still have an original RS4 3, and I really like it. Its a great parking lot, street basher. I have done a few mods to mine to make it better but even stock it was a decent car. It's no high end racer by any means but there are a ton of aftermarket market parts available for it, and it is very upgradable. If you are going to be running in streets and parking lots I strongly recommend a shaft drive car over a belt drive, which btw the RS4 3 SS+ is a shaft drive.

You will need a radio and receiver since the 18ss+ kit does not come with one. You will also need a gow igniter, a fuel bottle, and you will also want a fuel filter. You may want to pick up a receiver battery pack to use rather than the AAs, but that can be done later if need be. The body comes clear so you will need to trim and paint it, so get some lexan specific paint while you are at it, pactra makes some nice colors in a spray can if you don't have an air brush. Other than that the kit comes with just about everything you should need to get going.

nice, thanks for that info.

i just did a search on ofna ultra and it seems that they are not that great. plus if i want to learn more about this, i think i would rather assemble it myself and perhaps look into the radio remotes more.

whats a good website to look into the radios? what brands should i stay with?

If you are looking for an RTR over a kit you can also look at the RS4 3 EVO, it is complete out of the box with a radio and even a painted lid.

You could also look in to the Team associate Nitro TC3 rtr. It too comes with a radio and pre painted lid.

Either of these should be much easier to find upgrade and stock repair parts for. You may want to check with your lhs and see which manufacturers they carry parts for, that way when you break something the parts may be more easily obtained.

Check out our radio gear forum and do some reading. There are so many options for radio equipment now days. I use a Synth radio which uses no crystals and gives you the option of all 30 FM channels by dialing them in, I use the JRXS3, but many now prefer a Spectrum type system. I have too many cars with too many receivers to upgrade them all now. But there is a ton of info in the radio forum.

Kits are great, personally I prefer a kit over an rtr, it allows you to know your vehicle inside and out so when you do break it is easier to fix it. Plus I just really enjoy building them too.

my best advice is by a car for a track in your area. I find off-road cars to be much more fun, you can throw them over ramps and have them on all terrain. You will get bored driving around your street with an on-road car but if there is a on-road track near you it would be much better.
