Most of my time during work is spent at a desk in front of a computer. I share a large office with another co-worker so in order for me to listen to my NFL Network talk radio on Sirius, music, or training videos I typically use a set of headphones that came with my iphone.

The headphones in my opinion are horrible and terribly uncomfortable for any extended amount of time. I think I'd much prefer an over the ear type headphones, something with good sound and comfortable for sure. I've seen the Beats by Dre, but really can't see any reason to spending $200-300 on a set of headphones.

Anyone have suggestions for a decent set of headphones by any chance?

I have a set of Plantronics USB headphones that aren't bad at all. I use them on my netbook and they work great for doing what you want. They ran about $30 to $40.

i have a set of sony over the ear type ..i use them at the computer ...i find them very comfortable ..you can wear them for hours at a time ....and the sound is pretty good to ...best thing is i only paid around 30$ for them a couple years ago

A guy I work with has a set and the sound is grrrrreat but I couldn't ever see myself spending that much on headphones plus if I did I would have to be buried with them because my wife would kill me:D

I have the Skull Candy Full Metal Jackets. They're the ear plug type ear buds that go down in your ear and seal out back ground noise. Plus the cable is woven with aluminum to prevent breakage. I love them, and hate apple buds with a passion.

I use the klipsch x5 and love them. They block out a ton of noise and the sound is incredible. They are canalphones however. I find that quality buds are more comfortable for long durations. The over ear style makes my ears hot. I also have a set of the Bose ie2s and they are comfy but they haven't been used since got the klipsch.

Me too, not only hot, but I always end up with a pressure point somewhere that after an hour or so feels like I have vice grips clamped to my ear.

Michael,

I myself have always had problems wearing in-ear or over-ear earphones as they always tend to make my ear sore after only an hour or so. However, I've been using JVC Marshmallow's (in-ear earphone) and they are flat out amazing. The soft part is basically the same material as ear protection earplugs. I wear them nearly 8 hours straight at work now and have been for months. They're only $15-$20. I think I paid $17 at WalMart. (I even accidentally washed them with my work clothes and they still work well and sound good).

I've got the klipsh image s4. Amazing sound and relatively cheap. When you go with klipsh you know it will be good! They're also super comfortable :D

I've heard about the Klipsh S4's, I'm just very leery of another set of ear bud type headphones. The iphone/ipod ones are horrible! But I may just have to do a bit more reading on the S4's.

I've heard of Skullcandy headphones and will have to check them out. They seem to have headphones in all kinds of price ranges.

The $1200 headphones are just a touch out of my price range. ;)

My advice? Whatever you get, try to spring for noise cancelling phones. The single biggest issue that affects people with phones on is noise. If you're in noise, what do you do? Turn up the iPod to overcome the noise. Then what happens? Temporary hearing shift. Do it too often, it becomes permanent. Knock down the background noise and you'll moderate the volume more appropriately. (Yeah, I do this for a living)

That being said, I use Skullcandy Ink'd right now. They're in-the-ear phones. I like them because they're convenient. But there are some side effects. Without going into too much technical detail, the rubber tips thoroughly seal the ear canal. Which is good because it gives great bass. But it's bad because you can hear every little noise you make. Your breathing. Heartbeat. Feet on the ground. (see Occlusion Effect). So it's a tradeoff...

Candyman, being an expert in hearing - would you suggest in-the-ear (ear buds) over over-the-ear type headphones?

I'll take hearing my breathing and such to drown out the herd of cattle stomping through the cube farm. :hehe:

Seriously though, I noticed after going to the ear canal type buds that I use much less volume than I used to since there isn't as much loss compared to open air designs.

My wife has a pair of Bose QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones and my son has a pair of Beats Pro's. Both do an excellent job at eliminating background noise and both sound amazing. Downside to the Bose is that it uses a rechargeable battery to power them. Downside to both is the price so they are not for everyone. You also have to be real careful with Beats knockoffs.

Tough call. But from a purely technical standpoint you run the risk of damaging your hearing more with ear buds than OTE phones. That's because the buds (especially the rubber tipped ones) don't allow for the natural reflection of sound back out of the ear canal. That's what causes the occlusion effect. It's also what gives more perceived bass. Which in turn causes a louder perceived volume. And more volume=more possibility for hearing damage. One benefit to the rubber tipped inserts is that they do inherently block background noise better.

I personally use rubber tipped inserts. But I tend to not push them in all the way. That helps when talking on the phone. I hate my voice echoing in my ears when I talk. And these inserts are notorious for that. So I sneak them out just a touch and it's much better.

I despise the stock Apple earbuds or any like them. My ears are small and standard earbuds always fall out.

If I wasn't so hung up on convenience, I'd opt for OTE phones. I just think they're more comfortable in general. But they are more susceptible to letting noise in. So def look into noise cancelers.
