I'm guessing most of you are unfamiliar with this northern tradition. Lake Winnebago here in Wisconsin has the largest self sustaining population of sturgeon in the world, its one place I hope to work once I finish my schooling. Every February the DNR runs a spearing season. no hooks, lines, or sinkers. You basically cut a hole with a chainsaw in the ice thats about 4' by 3' and stand above it with a spear waiting for a fish to swim by. This year the season started this weekend and there were over 4000 shacks out on the ice. The largest fish speared was captured Saturday. 212.2 pounds and 84" long. Not my picture but here it is.

You need to upload the pic to your gallery here or elsewhere on the web like Photobucket and then post the URL of the pic between the IMG tags in order for us to see it.

It looks like you tried to cut and paste from an email image which will not work.

would this happen to be the pic you are trying to post ??

Yea thats the picture. Its weird that it shows up on my first post for me but not for you guys. No idea who the guy is, could be the guy that speared it.

I caught a 66" sturgeon in the delta here in CA about 8 years ago. Largest fish I have ever caught.

Actually measured 68", but the captain rolled the dice and kept it since it was a slow day on the boat. The deck hand made sure to cut it up quickly once we got back to the dock. 48" - 66" is the limit here in CA.

Do you eat Sturgeon? Looks like a big arse cat fish to me! LOL Here in MD we Rock Fish which is fun as well. This year I caught a 42" fish... that was a blast! Spear fishing for Sturgeon sounds like fun. Anything that includes chainsaws and spears can't be bad at all!

chainsdaws ?? where on EARTH did that come from godale ?

more to the point, why waste good fish meat by spraying it about using a chainsaw to cut the thing up ? :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

I have no clue what they do with them. I imagine they get eaten. I know black caviar comes from sturgeon. The one pictured above had no eggs in it. Females produce eggs once every 4 years or so. If it was full of eggs it would have gone 250-260 pounds easily. This fish was estimated to be around 100 years old.

Chainsaw is used to cut the spearing hole in the ice.

Update: The season will close tomorrow. Right now 1657 fish have been speared with 78 of them being over 100 pounds.
