I'm looking at buying my first rc kit. I'm really interested in getting an on road street car. However there doesn't to seem to be a whole lot of options when it comes to kits. There seems to be a lot more options for the off road kits. Are the on road kit/cars less popular or am I missing something?.

If you're looking for a kit, the Super Sport (SS) versions of HPI's touring cars are good. And I think they come with engine and radio (correct me if I'm wrong) so you don't have to buy them yourself. I also think that associated and kyosho have kits out, but those require you to buy your own engine and radio.

Yes, though, offroad RC has a bigger fanbase. Almost all the people I can think of that I know that have RC's have offroad ones. If you're looking for a kit then most RC manufacturers offer kit versions of their most popular vehicles. The exception to the rule is Traxxas, who always has their cars "ready-to-race".

I believe Associated sells RTR and kit versions of just about every one of its' models, with the MGT being RTR-only (which is a shame... it looks like it'd be a really fun build).

Being an HPI fan i'd have to recommend one of the Nitro RS4 3 cars good parts support, plenty of aftermarket, and lots of cool bodies to choose from. I actually have a Nitro MT which i've set up for on road driving. I just have to pull the 2 speed and put in a slipper clutch and put dirt tires on for offroad.
HPI also has a line of "stage D" drift cars too if you like drifting.
