RC Driving Style
I'm not sure with this one so I need some help. I'de like to know what temps some of you r running with the stock engine (B 01 ). I've finished 5 tanks so far and have only seen temps reach 175. I want to start tuning after tank 6.. What kind of temps do you run? Need opinions please.. I'm experienced with .15 & .12 engines, but never .21 or above. I don't know if it actually makes that much of a difference, but i'm on a budget and don't want to blow it.. Thanks.
 
Temps change not only from engine to engine, but from user to user. You may have engine XYZ and you may want long engine life. You, therefore, may use the 230-240 range as your "good temp" index. I may also have engine XYZ. I however like to race. Because my RC only sees the track once a week, I may run 250-260 because I know the RC may only see 1 1/2 - 2 gallons of fuel all season. Next season, I'll want to rebuild or buy a new engine anyway so running it a little hotter isn't that big of a deal.

If you're bashing, good temps are 230-250ish. You should be able to get a few gallons out of the engine at those temps.

Also, another tip that a lot of people don't know. After you shut down your Nitro, if you turn the flywheel by hand so the piston is bottom dead center, you engine will last longer. If you piston is up in the sleeve when it cools, the sleeve will shrink around the piston and cause premature stretching of the sleave.

How do I know what bottom dead center (BDC) is? If I turn the flywheel the point where it gets tight and then back the other way until it gets tight again, I know someplace in the middle is bottom dead center (BDC). I just guess the middle spot and call it good.

Good tips robH, we have a few guys at the track that run their motors at 280-320.. too hot for me!! I perfer to run my ws7II at 220-240 (i like it alittle loaded up, makes it easier to drive some)

but anything under 270 i would say is safe
 
Thanks Rob. I kinda figured temps in that range but was'nt sure. And the BDC thing is done on all my engines as soon as I shut them down, but an excellent tip I gotta say... Thanks to you also slothy.

damn that's hot! I have never heard of anyone in their right mind exceeding 280-290. How often do those guys rebuild / buy new engines? It's can't be longer than a gallon.

I always thought 240 F was a good temp no matter what engine. That's what I run. As far as keeping the piston somewhere around BDC, I never really started doing that till I got my non pull engine. Good tip Rob, I'm gonna make sure I do that from now on. Besides, makes it easier to bump start my engine.
 
I had a GS21B01 in my MBX, usually ran it between 220-240, sometimes peaked out past 250 during races.
 
In my experience ( I owned 2 of those engines) The engine will run well without damage @ 280 if taken care of properly. Make sure you see plenty of smoke trailing out the pipe. I would run 250-260 if you want to be safe but I have ran that engine upwards of 300 for many races with no noticeable loss of compression or performance or tuneablility. I had 2.5 gallons through one engine and a 1.5 through the other. With that said I always used a clean air filter, broke in both engines properly and always maintianed them after use. To each his own.

So, what would you say about the performance of this engine? Its highs, its lows? Is it a pretty good engine? Is there any other you could compare it to? Thanks..
 
I don't know if I could compare it to another engine, but it is a very strong sport engine, it surprised me the nuts it had. It runs all day long if taken care of. It always had enough power to take tripples with confidence.

Thats what I like to hear. I'll just be bashin and lookin to get a few gallons through. It's nice to hear shes got some balls. I still only have 5 tanks through the mill, but no rain 2morrow means I can finish break in and tuning.

I liked the GS21B01, one of the few decent motors in RTR cars other than the Hyper 21, the GS produces plenty of torque but really lacking on top end with a low rpm range (32,000 rpm?). I agree it can witchstand high temps, but since you can run it around 220-240 it'll give plenty of power, and I always used cold plugs like Rossi R5, McCoy MC-9, OS #8.

I'm curious of how the GS R21PB is (the black engine), it looks cool.
