Lately I noticed that my savage has had some issues starting. I have the roto start (In my stock 25 mill) and it didnt seem to want to turn over. So I figured it was at the top of its compression part, so I spun the flywheel over with my finger to get the piston down in the cylinder. It still seemed like it was slipping a bit, but it started. Then today when I went to take it out, I couldnt get it to spin the mill at all. So I brought it in to check the one way bearing, and it seemed fine, so I just cleaned it (Tested it again..everythings fine) and put it back in. Once I got everything back together I tried again, and got the same problem. The mill still seems vapor locked. Seems like the roto start is spinning and trying to turn it over, but it isnt turning the mill over at all. Anyone have any ideas? Next I was gonna tear open the backplate and see if theres a sheared gear or something, but figured Id ask before I ripped it open again. It doesn't seem to be making a crunching sound or anything, everything sounds completely normal. Any suggestions? (Besides get a pullsart? I'm not a pullstart guy, so thats pretty much out of the question) Thanks in advance.

if the one way is good i dont know what it would be besides the backplate...

if it is the backplate I'm pretty sure i have a spare around you can have ...let me know what you find

Mine did the exact same thing today. I've never had a problem starting it before. The motor was tough like it was vapor locked, I loosened the plug to relieve the pressure and got the engine to turn over. It seemed the roto would turn the motor part of the time (on again, off again). As I haven't experienced one ways going bad before, does this describe it? Luckily I got it going and ran two tanks without it stalling before the food hit the table.

Ok thanks pilot. I'm gonna tear into the back plate and see if thats it. Hopefully its something that I can fix, Its suppose to snow tomorrow, so Id like to get some bashing in before theres to much..lol.. Thanks for the offer on the back plate. I might just take ya up on that. Ill let ya know, and thanks again!

How many gallons do you have through the engine and one-way? As the one way slips, it wears down the shaft it sits on. Then, when it's cold outside, stuff shrinks just enough to make it slip really bad.

I find that my OS 21RG slips really bad when it's cold out (less than 50 degrees). If I put the truck under the heater of my car as I drive to the bash site, it warms the engine and it doesn't hardly slip at all. Until it cools back down again when I switch to a different truck for awhile.

BTW, I use pullstarts only.

well I just opened up the backplate and that seems fine. (Was suprised to see all the gears were metal! My e-z start on my maxx, was all plastic..Gotta love Hpi)

I have about a gallon on the mill, and its the original one way bearing. Its weird though because when I put the one way on the shaft, I can turn the mill over (Its hard due to the compression, but it still doesn't slip) by hand. Today was 19f degrees, but I've had it inside the house for the last 4 hours or so, and it even does it in the house. Now I'm completely stumped..

I had a few one way bearings go up in similar style, when you engage them by hand they seem to grab but when you put the power of the rotostart on it they slip.

If you have access to another 1way try that out to see if that's your issue.

Thats kinda what I'm thinking. I dont see how it can be anything else. I'm gonna go have to order one up. Thanks for the help fellas.

One way

If your engine feels like it vaper locked and is hard to turn over then the one way is doing it's job. If your roto start is spinning and not turning the flywheel then there is a problem in that area Next time it does this put a screwdriver in the starter drive and see how hard it is to turn over. If it's hard to turn by hand it's going to be hard for your starter too. Is it hard to start ? is it flooded It could be hydro locking (too much fuel in the chamber). Unless I misundersood your post It does not sound like it's a one way problem Unless the roto start is just spinning

When I can get the mill to turn over, it fires right up. This morning I tried it to start it with the drill and still had the same prob. The one way is the only thing I can think thats doing it. But I've never had a one way that was bad, still grip on the shaft when I spin it by hand. Ill get a new one way, and if that doesn't work, then I'm completely stumped.

i have had a 1-way work fine after cleaning and all that and you put it on and try it works fine ,BUT when you put it under a load liek a pullstart or roto then it just slips definatly sounds like the 1-way ,if its your roto backplate i think i havea spare i will let go reasonable

Well if the roto is spinning and the fly wheel isen't then the one way is not grabing the shaft providing every thing else is ok . A oneways bigest enamy is debri . What it sounds like yours is doing is not all the needles are going into the lock posistion That's why under a heavy load they can't hold it. It takes a very little bit of debri to keep a needle from locking that's why cleaning only works some times. I would replace it any thing else wrong in the starting sys. would be obvious if it was broken

Did this help you out? I am in the same situation. I took it out and cleaned it carb cleaner. I noticed 2 rollers were missing (I sprayed them out?) ...

Anyhoo, should this grab it turn the bearing on the shaft by hand or do they have to turn pretty fast? The reason I was asking is because I could easly turn it either way with no fricton what so ever.

What is the status on this?My engine would not start for the life of me and it turned out that I left some fuel in the case and tank and that gummed up my whole fuel line. I had to replace my lines and flush out my tank. Then I had my slipper issue happen to me after that! My Slipper was not engaging and my slipper nut was tightened all the way down. Turns out my spur gear and the little paper thing was completely tore up. Replaced it and put all my stuff back on and it ran like a champ!

I got a new one way put in last night and it works like a champ. Hope it holds as long as the first one did.

4u2nv-Did you get yours up and going again?

I was having problems like this, and took it apart still could not figure it out, So I took the back plate off and the pin that the easy start engages was broke. I still have not fixed it though.

The motor in the roto start could be getting bad. I had the same problem with the starter on a Maxx and turned out the starter motor was bad.
