With those old packs you could probably expect less then 3-4 minute run time. About 30 seconds of full power; and when I say full power, I don't mean it will have power. You can pick up 2000mah nicds for about 10 bucks these days. Your charger will work fine as long as it works properly. New 2000 nicd's will probably net you around 7-8 minutes with stock gearing and a light trigger finger. I wouldn't bother picking up a cheap esc/motor combo. Just get the cheapest forward/reverse esc duratrax makes('bout $30). Running those old batteries through an esc even as basic as a xl5/12t would be like running 5 year old gas through a new engine. Batteries make more of a difference than any other mod. Period. I'm pretty sure you'll have a hard time getting your girlfriend or buddies interested in our hobby if the truck you let them drive is dead before your t maxx is warmed up, too. Just me $.02.
