Were is everyone? I am dying to get out there and burn so fuel! can't wait I start my vacation in like 2 more hours. Isnt it funny when you have to wait only 2 hours it seems like every minute is an eternaty?

Enjoy ur vacation! Mine isn't till November.

have fun on vacation. :mex:

I took last week off and my second week will be for the bashfest in august. My wife works for a doctor's office. when he goes on vacation he closes the office down. We don't have much choice when we go on vacation.

Tell me about it. I had to wait overnight in Chigago since my flight arrived after my other flight that would take me home and the 10 hours in O'Hare waiting for my outgoing flight to take me home was hell!!

I was gone at a fiber training class all day yesterday learning how to terminate fiber for networking. All I can say is WOW. It was a lot of fun learning about it. I can't believe the work you have to go thru to terminate one end. The guy was right though, it's an art. Getting the end polished right on the first try would take a lot of practice. I guess there are machines that will do it for you. The only down fall is the price tag is like $4k.

Vaction starts in T-6 hours and counting. hehe I am praying for good weather. I have a brand new engine in my Maxx that needs to be broken in. Last nights weather report said 80% chance of rain for Friday. :( Luckly they have taken the rain out of the forcast for Saturday and Sunday.

I'm sooo friggen jealous. You're learning how to play with fiber amd I don't have a clue. :( I only know cat5 and 10base2 (thin net). I know 802.11B too but you can hardly call that "networking". :hehe:

Yeah. 802.11b is very simple. Where the cash comes into play is securing the Wi-Fi networks. A friend and I go wardriving every once in a while and I am amazed at how many networks I find that are wide open. How hard it is to tell your WAPs to not broadcast their SSID? There were still WAPs that were broadcasting the default SSID and had the default password! DOH! I built my own cantenna to use as an extention to my PCMCIA card. I am waiting for prices to come down in 802.11g so I can upgrade some of my hardware. That way I can benifit from the speed but still be able to use the 802.11b at the cafe and at work.

alot of the time it isn't the IT folks that have a say in securing the wireless. I've been bitching about that very thing for 2 years to my boss. But nothing ever gets changed, and the techs here (me included) are not allowed to mess with the infrastructure. I don't care anymore if someone jacks a piece of our fat pipe.

Vacation? hmmm....I think I need to take one of those. My vacation starts today at 3:30. Oh well....

Isn't it funny how we can bitch about the security and nothing get done about it? But you can bet your paycheck that if something would happen such as a hacker, then we are the first people that get reemed about it. Office polotics suck!

Why are you not allowed to mess with the infrastructure? Do you have it out sourced to someone else? Personally I don't think I could work for a place that had the networking stuff out sourced. That is what I love to work with. :) Stick me in a server room and I will be happy all day long. :)

We just spent thousands of dollars to upgrade our firewalls and vpn connections here at headquarters and at all the remote offices. Then some idiot manager comes up with some great idea to install those Linksys wireless access points at all the offices.

We started screaming about lack of security. They didnt listen. We got hacked and they started screaming at us. When we brought the subject up again, management all fell silent and made us all agree not to mention anything about the Linksys access points.

Magically, they all dissappeared by the time we came in the next morning.

LOL. The way I would handle something like that is draft up a letter and sign it then send it up the chain of command. That way when things hit the fan I will have proof that I told them but they decided not to listen. :)
