Tried my Bosch hand held detailing sander yesterday, 'the type that vibrates' and it didn't work! I had previously given it a hard time doing another job and after a while it had stopped, I assumed from over heating, but having left it a while to cool it was still dead.

Today I took it apart, traced the circuit but found nothing wrong, checked the armature windings at the commutator, all seemed of equal resistance, I was about to strip it for bearings and bin the rest when I searched Youtube and found someone who had the same problem and had traced their fault to a broken connection on one of the field windings. So I took mine apart again and found the same issue, one of the windings was open circuit, (there are only two!). The wires leading off into the windings are very fine enameled wire and the ends are crimped on to a small terminal, mine had been severed at the crimp, there was just enough slack in the wire to allow me to solder it back on and 'over soldered' the others and it now works.
Saved me a bit of money, although, up until then I was quite enjoying choosing its replacement.
