I have a schumacher procat which I raced in the early 90s which has the mms diffs and layshaft which iam going to strip and rebuild the radio equipment I have will probably need replacing as well as the speed controller as they probably won't be compatible (futaba) what is the best to use now as I used to run 40mhz also want to run lipo batteries and what charger can anyone recomend I may want to race the car again

Welcome to RCTALK.COM!!!
What a spectacular r/c to revive!!!
I'm a vintage guy too. 😃
If you're planning to race, I'd start this project with a trip to your local tracks.
See what classes are running and what those rules are.
A vintage class may even require vintage gear!
If not and brushless and lipo's are in order, 2s system. There are lots of brands to choose from so be smart and buy once!
Track rules might dictate a hard-case battery pack, 17.5 or.13.5 motor, blinky esc and more.
Upgrading the radio is easy. Somewhat based on budget. If you're looking at low cost solid unit, ppl like flysky.
They also offer a Noble 4+ that suits most racers needs here.
I am prob going to buy a RadioMaster MT12. Steep learning curve but AMAZING capability!

The BEST news about your Schumacher is that there are YEARS of successful racing. Set up sheets for almost any track type should be easy to find!

I haven't been back to a track in years. If I ever actually get to race again, I plan to start slow in Novice classes and re-learn racing.
No sense being the fastest and first to slam the wall and break!
I don't imagine Schumacher vintage parts are any cheaper or easier to find than most others... research this WELL before you decide how fast is fast enough!

I can't wait to see your build!!!😃

Welcome to RCT. The Hota D6 Pro LiPo charger is as good as it gets in its price range.

The radio has nothing to do with the speed controller. Any radio will work with any ESC.

For an ESC, are you putting a brushless motor in it? What motor?

For a radio, there are budget options out there, and really stupid expensive options.

Less than $100
Flysky GT3B is the best bang for the buck radio, and receivers are dirt cheap. They have a 10 model memory, so you can control 9 other RC's with the same radio. You just have to buy receivers.

Just over $100 ($135 or so), I would say the Radiomaster MT12 is hard to beat, but also hard to learn. It has options that require you to use logic programming to take advantage of. It's the new kid on the block, but support for the radio is growing pretty quickly, so there are lots of videos popping up showing how to do more advanced things with it.

A lot of the racers out there seem to be going to the Flysky Noble NB4+. I have no experience with it, but have heard a lot if great things about it.

I had three procats back in the day now Schumacher has revived the procat I would get the pro transmission kit, I did and installed it in my Masami XLS it makes the drivetrain near bullet proof allowing you to run brushless motor up to 6.0 and lipo power, get a good brushless speed control and newer radio and while your at it put a ball bearing steering kit in it and the roller drive shafts in the rear, that car will rip it up

I've seen some running at a track. They look as fast and smooth as ever... faster even!
Schumacher always made nice kits.
I bet racing them back then was a blast!
I was never a great driver so I watched guys like you in awe most of the time. 😎
You prob watched guys like me in utter terror! 🤣
Holy crap that thing is fast!!! Why isn't he turning?!?!? 😲 BANG!!!

I stand by this comment on rc racing "competition builds competitve driving skills". in 1992 I had two procats modified as much as I could get them I practiced with 2 drivers at our local track that had similar dirt as the track we were going to race on at the 1992 NORRCA Nationals. I got it dialed in pretty good. 3 of the top drivers in 4wd mod were running The Shumacher Bosscat they were preproduction cars and they had a clear advantage over the rest of the field. I had to run against Brian Kinwald, Cliff Lett and several other top Yokomo drivers, I got my ass handed to me that day but I took home a trophy none the less. Brett Wallace won the top spot for the second year in a row. he was Schumachers top driver in the us. he taught me alot

The times I felt I was driving best was when I stepped up in class. Running against better drivers made me focus more. I wanted the win more too.
I agree with you 100%!

I basically more or less finished I went with the original mms diffs and layshaft new belts and bearings using a 10.5t turn hobbywing motor with speed controller the power is amazing 90t spur 21t pinion only so far no problems with the transmisson and not using a slipper see how long it lasts

Still a few things to would like to fit a different type of wheel and a couple of small jobs to be done after 30+yrs sat idle

Nice restoration it brings back memories from the 90's, if you plan on racing this beauty I would recommend installing a pro transmission upgrade and a ball raced steering kit, 2.2 schumacher aero disc wheels or JC racing wheels, also bosscat rear shock tower and lower link mount, newer wing mount.

Going to leave more or less as is have mms rear mount and wing mount rare parts to find these days but will probably change the steering for the ball raced type wheels iam going to change for jc racing black spoked and thinking of going for the alloy inner rear transmisdon mount but want to keep mms diffs and layshaft see how the belts hold up
