Savage S 25 engine mod

J2, I just recently put the aluminum shoes and only have about 2 tanks on them. But I can tell a difference over the stock. I am able to hit a little more RPM's b/f they engage. Since they are fairly new, I haven't had to mess w/ any burrs.

BTW, what would make a burr form? It would seem that since you have aluminum rubbing against steel, that the aluminum (being softer than steel) would simply get rubbed smooth over time. Plus, where would the burrs form?

Right now, my savage is taking a break and being all torn apart for some cleaning, lubing, and a couple of upgrades/mods to her.

Well I have read that the burrs form when using Aluminum shoes. I have used them once but not too long till I changed them out. Have you tried either of the two I mention/ I want to get an idea. Maybe I shoud try them out.

Thanks DL

J2, I haven't tried either one of the clutches that you mentioned. I have heard good things about the Fioroni, but that was mostly from magazines, not from actual users.

Sorry, I can't give any more info than that, all the info I have about them are from advertisements, so they are definitely biased toward their own products.

They are light weight and they also come with 2 sets of springs to really dial in your clutch shoes.

Hey Digital..

I'm seriously thinking of getting these shoes because of the 2 different spring options. Any idea what size the springs are? Does it say what mm?

Iis that with the stock mill or a wasp??....and...which springs are you using here?

WR, I couldn't find any mm readings on the springs. But I did align them all up on a ruler to give you a comparison. I put all three of them on there so they all have the same reference point. It might not look like it in the pic, but they are all aligned up the same way.

I basically measured the opening of the springs. As you can see, there was a 1/16 difference b/t each spring. But between the stock and the silver one, there is a 2/16 in difference. I simply converted the inches to mm for you.

BTW, you really can't tell from the pic, but the OFNA springs are much thicker in diameter over the stock springs. Also notice how much longer the silver spring is over the stock spring. This also helps out b/c, it puts the springs point of contact further out on the clutch shoe. Thus, making the engine reach higher RPM's before the shoes engage.

I am running with the silver springs on my Wasp .28. I hope this helps you out.

Later....

Thanks Digital..

awesome ilustration!! you helped me out bunches. I was hoping the springs were thicker than the stockers...Thats what I'm looking for. I think the only question i have now is if those springs will fit over the s-25 pilot nut? If they do not i can hopefully order an OFNA pilot nut that will fit the s-25?

I thought about ordering the Mugen alum shoes and mugen springs...but i know in order to get the mugen springs to fit the s-25...they will have to rest on a Mugen pilot nut. The spings wont seat properly on the s-25 pilot nut.

If the OFNA shoes will fit without a different nut..i will go with those.

WR, those springs are fine with the S-25 pilot nut. I have the S-25 pilot nut and flywheel on my Wasp .28, with no problems.

It's alot harder to put those springs on, so becareful when you install them. You definitely don't want one to shoot across the room and not be able to find it.

SWEEEET!! i will order the ofna set tonight.

thanks again...been lot of helped to me.

The weather was nice yesterday so I took my Savage with the modded engine out of storage and gave it a try out in the school yard by my house. The engine fired up. The increase in power was there. No wheelies on demand yet but with the increased speed It seemed like the school yard got small reall quick. I almost nailed it into the fence when it shifted into second gear. The next thing on my list is a brake mod.

I have left the idle setting at factory which worked fine before but now the drive is engaging.
Instead of adjusting the carb:

I went out to the hobby shop and got the Aluminum clutch shoes. I spilled some blood putting them on. I hope it was worth it. I have to wait untill the morining to try it out. I am planning to go to Floyd Bennet field

Thanks Guys!

Next I have to work on the gearing.
