Hi. I've got a problem with my truck. I recently bought the picco engine for my savage and it's giving me problems. When i put the truck on the ground, the engine starts but stalls within seconds. if i lift the wheels off the ground and start it, it'll run pretty good: it shifts into second gear and will run at WOT. But only if i lift the wheels off the gound.
What could the prblem be? Is it the clutch or the engine, or is it something else?
Btw: i've broken the engine in for 7 tanks now, and i'm busy tuning the engine now.
Thanks in advance.

Does the clutch bell spin freely with the motor off?

What happens if you gas it a bit with the wheels in the air and then drop it on the ground. Will it drive around?

Sounds like your clutch is dragging. Pull the engine, spin the bell. If it doesn't spin freely, you have clutch, bearing or shimming issues. If it spins freely, check the springs on the shoes to see if they are installed correctly or if they exist or if they are dead.

You can pull the motor if you like but you can certainly spin the bell with the motor in the truck. It should freewheel with the motor off. Lift all four tires and spin the bell in both directions. It should not drag at all. If it drags you have a problem with the clutch, the transmission, or a rear. At that point you would have to pull the motor to investigate.

Push the truck forwards and backwards with the motor off. It should push freely in both directions. If you have your reverse module in forward (or if you do not have the reverse module installed) when you push the truck backwards the transmission will spin and attempt to spin the clutch bell.

RossB is correct... I guess I've been working on my maxx clutch so much lately that pulling the engine is an afterthought.

If you do feel some binding before pulling the engine, then pull it to see if it's in the trans or the engine clutch itself. It will more than likely be your engine clutch though since it won't sit at an idle with wheels on the ground without dieing.

Thanks for the input guys. I have not found a clutch problem, but i changed the clutch springs and shoes (the clutch springs are stiffer), so i hope that will help. And i'll try to get the engine tuned just right probably this weekend cause it's raining all the time here in Holland.
Thanks again!

Yeah, if the springs are weak it will cause the shoes to drag at a low RPM. I had that on my maxx recently. The clutch was slipping which caused a lot of heat and roasted the spring. Then the shoes were alway engaging regardless how low I set the idle.

Hope it works out for you.
