RC Driving Style
Hello,

New to nitro RC trucks (ran nitro planes a few years back), and have some questions about engine temps etc... First off I am running a Losi LST XXL, I broke the motor in per the manual. First, a random question, I have a temp gauge, where do I take the temp of the motor? I have been taking it where the head meets the block, is that correct? Second most of the driving I am doing is bashing up and down the street at not quite WOT but a lot of stops a starts and driving fairly aggressively, first off is that type of driving bad for the motor or should it be able to take it? Second part of that question is I am running the motor at about 280ish, is that to high? I think I have the motor tuned but it seems like that is a bit hot, and I find myself richening the HSN because of it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It should take your driving style with no problems and 280 is on the upper edge for good temps. I've run engines there a lot but 250-260 is better. Try taking the temp pointing down by the glow plug.

Personally, I think the tires are way to big/heavy on that rig for the gearing.

I had an aftershock with an LRP28 in it (pretty similar to the XXL stock engine). At first, I ran standard MT tires/wheels on it, it's top speed wasn't that great so I did a well known gear flip mod in the trans and added a +1 bell to it, then it ran pretty much the same speed as an LST2 (if not faster). While it ran about the same top speed, it was far more snappy than an LST2 with stock tires.

I figured I'd try the LST2 tires/wheels because of the ground clearance and plushness the tires add to the big air landings... man, it just killed my temps. I even dropped down to the stock gearing and comparatively, it was a dog. Throttle response was dead and temps still ran high. Not to mention the amount of clutch slip I had along with 2 speed chatter (slipping issue).

I found a happy medium running the flipped gear with a +1 bell and 17mm revo wheels/tires. Ran good temps and was still responsive. That combined with a smaller sidewall tire (revo vs standard MT tire) made it handle much better.

Just my nickles worth.
