Run Away RC Car

I have these pretty old RC cars that I just got started for the first time in a long time, and it's a run away. How do I stop the car from doing that?

First and foremost if it has an AM transmitter that's probably your problem right there. If the transmitter is not AM than you need to check your metal to metal screws for tightness and Loctite. For example check the motor mount screws on the bottom of the chassis and also check where the motor mounts to the engine mount.

So what should I do. I checked and it is an AM radio.

All brand new Alkaline batteries. No cheapies or batts you found in a drawer.
New batteries in the car, new batteries in the radio.
Test the movement of the servos BEFORE starting the engine.

At the very least add an external failsafe. Your best bet though is to replace the AM system with a newer 2.4 GHz system which have become really affordable (you can get them for about $100).

That's all good advice, AM radios aren't really worth bothering with anymore.
2.4 GHZ radios have come down substantially in price if you shop around.

That's the #1 upgrade(2.4ghz radio) right there, #2 is a new RX hump pack.
And it's multiple car capable, you just have buy an RX for each additional car.
