Just getting started. I've done the rough cuts and some of the inside rust. Parts of it will be painted on the inside, and other parts will be on the outside so rollovers will make it scratch and rust. There's already some silver on the rails of the pickup bed since it will take a beating there, and get scratched down to bare metal.
I haven't done any dremel work yet. the closer I get to the end, the more it will rust and fade.
No airbrush work yet, either. Just got started on the rough rust.

It's looking great already. Once you get it painted, you need to build a model to scale of an old barn on a farm that's been weathered for years with the truck parked out back.

I did that many years ago with an old pickup with a still in the back, and a battered VW microbus shot full of holes. 1/24th scale. I have a couple of photos buried somewhere, but the model is long gone.
This one just won't look right with the slick wheels.

hmm, guess its time to build a scaled crawler. I saw someone making a ralley wheel replica for scale trucks that wouls fit perfect.

looking good rolex i like the rusty look you have going in all the spots that would rust

Looks great! I really like that idea of paint on the outside, rust underneath. What kind of technique are you using to apply the rust? Are you using photo's of the real thing for inspiration??

Thanks for the peek Rolex, I'll be bugging you for more pics if you don't keep them coming!

I'm really looking forward to doing something on my own in the near future!

Before I paint anything I do a search for photos and download them. I did it for the Hummer, and I got almost 50 pics of the Dodge Power wagon. This one was a search for "Rusty old trucks". Quite a few 'artsy' photos of trucks in farm fields, left to rust in peace.
Whatever has been done so far has been done with 2 different browns, and stippled on with a brush. Tonight I'll be doing a third color with a bit of orange in it.
I lucked out today when I pulled into a parking lot and got to sit and take a good long look at a VERY faded, VERY rusted Ford, about early 70s, and it gave me some great ideas. It's gonna' take a lot of work to look that bad.

Cool! I was wondering if you just winged it all the time or not.
I've got a soft spot for older trucks. I know I'm going to like the finished product alot!

I just caught your post as I was about to log off. The truck is sitting here waiting for more paint. When I first got it I thought it was too beautiful to rust up, but then I realized I can always bling another one later.

there's an article in one of my magazines from a few months ago. They did a tamaya high lift toyota, but they did it with a weathered look. They painted a lot of dust on the windshied and tput wipermarks like you would see on something that's spent alot of time in a dry climate, it looked VERY realistic.

Man looks like you got the Mater theme going on from Cars...

Thing is that is a hardbody. It's easier to get a weathered look with a hardbody since they are painted on the outside. I have seen guys heat the styrene bodies and then push a rock or something similar in to the hot soft plastic to make dents. Leave one body panel primer, painted on rust that looks so real its amazing. I have a clod body and am considering doing something along those lines to it for a scaler once I finish my tuber.

I have that very article and plan on doing the same thing on my Yota HighLift when I get around to building it. Going with the classic tan color though complete with dents, rust and primer spots.

Last night I cut out the grill, and now it's also missing a headlight. Conveniently, the film on the outside of the body is a great mask for things like window trim. They should include it on the inside of the bodies also. It would save us hours of masking.
The reason I always look for pics of trucks I'm about to paint is for the little details. You get a lot of ideas. Wiper wear on the glass, are the window moldings rusty chrome, aluminum or black rubber, is the grill chrome, painted like the truck, or white? And, yes, I've already dug out my blowtorch and I'm planning the dents.
The worse it looks, the better it looks.

I wish we could see it in person, pics won't do it justice. Not with that kind of detail.
