I am brand new to the world of RC's and just bought a t-maxx 2.5 a couple days ago. I am an auto mechanic by trade so the concepts and ideas behind it aren't new, but how they get from point a to b when building these things, I am a newbie. I was going over a jump and had a wipe out, and fortunately didn't break the front a-arm or anything else, but on the front shock on the right front tire, the metal shaft that goes in and out of the body bent, and this kink won't let the suspension on that wheel travel correctly. I would like to buy a new shock, but I think they only come in sets of 8 or upgrade, and I like what I've got and don't need all the extra ones. SO, I see that MIP makes a shaft for the shock absorber that they sell individually. Is this a huge PITA to install on the shock, or is it not too bad? I know I'll need some shock oil too, but if it is a huge hassle, I will just keep looking for a spare shock somewhere. Thanks,
Jared Williamson

Nothing to it man!

Remove the shock from the truck
Remove spring from the shock
Remove rod end (the captured ball that is threaded onto shock shaft)
Remove shock cap
Drain fluid, if you are careful, you might be able to save it
Slide shaft/piston assembly out
Remove piston from shaft, a couple e-clips hold it on.

Re-assemble

Should be a non-issue for a professional gearhead.

Hope this helps and Welcome to RCNT!:)

Mr T

you should while you have your truck down change the piston heads to the dualstage RPM ones as well and change all the shafts to the MIP hardened ones...the piston heads give those shocks some really nice control and the stock shafts bend like butter all the time.....get used to ugrading the susension side of a t-maxx

I will second the RPM dual stage pistons. They greatly improved the handling on my T. As far as changing the shaft, there really is nothing to it, once you get it apart it wil all become pretty self explanitory. I would not reuse the oil though, while you are in there do it right and change the oil, just make sure you use the same weight oil that is in the other shocks. If you have a digital camera you could always take a few pics as you disassemble, this will give you a visual reference to get it back together should you forget where something goes.

I'd change all of em to 30 if he does the dual stage pistons and he's racing.....40/45 if your maxx is in the air more than the ground.....

Thanks guys, I'm going to the hobby shop this afternoon for some oil and a couple new shafts for the shocks. My other hobby is building and breaking and rebuilding mud bog trucks and jeeps, so I am really looking forward to working on this thing. the all around experience of the t-maxx is a blast, and thanks again for the advice,
Jared Williamson

T-maxxJared welcome to the forum and the T-Maxx is a blast!! Do you have any pics of your mud boggers I would love to see some of them . I have a 74 Chevy Pu I used to take out and break lol actually the tranny is out now. Good luck with your shocks.

I will have to look around to see if I have any pics, but my ride is a 79 jeep CJ 7 on 39 1/2" super swampers, t-150 3 speed manual, and an amc 304. It's down for the moment while we are throwing a dana 60 under the rear. My brother, who is my partner in crime :hammer: with this stuff and also bought a t-maxx the same day I did, runs a 80' chevy blazer on 42" swampers, a healthy 350, and a turbo 400 trans. I'll have to see if I can find some pics somewhere and scan them, we are not high tech enough for a digital camera yet.

Jared:

Working on the Maxx is liking working on an old CJ. I laugh at the engineering sometimes, but then it's simplicity makes me smile.

Another thing you will notice is that the stock end caps will start to leak at the top of the threads. Traxxas sells upgraded metal caps for your shocks. Once you see leaks just upgrade the caps and your issues are over.

I really want to see pics now scaned or not lol. My Chevy only had 33x12.50 for now hehe. It also has a 350. I mostly did rock climbing and snow up in the mnt here it get extremely deep :).

in south to central florida where I ride, there are no mountains, no hills, no rocks, just a little sugar sand and a LOT of mud and water. The name of the game is he who has the tallest tires, biggest motor, and most daring right foot wins. that jeep and blazer may sound and be cool, but when we trailer them to the mud bog (not street legal), they both get hung up at least twice, and we drive them to the limit, usually well past them. To put it best, it's a thing of beauty :smoke:

Thats cool!!! My truck is well pretty much street legal lol. It not very pretty either painted flat black built out of about 6 diffrent trucks but it runs good and is awesome off road, it pretty much all stock other than limited slip rear end, body lift tires and couple bolt ons to the motor, but its a blast I can't wait to get it going again. Ill see if I have some pic on my pc I can post

The most commonly heard phrases at the mud bog probably apply to the R/C track:
(as the truck is popping, knocking, pinging)
1. "whats that smell?"
2. "is it supposed to do that?"
3. KA-BAM!!! "I hope that noise was something we ran over..."
4. "Oops."

Hey Jared I'm in pompano beach too...what hobby shop you go to???...you going to MIlls pond park to race at all???? saturday is the day man.....

Plaidfish,
I go to southeast RC on copans road just east of powerline. I would love to go to mills pond, but I went there about 5 years ago when I had an rc10gt and it seemed like everyone always had my frequency, and that was with am and a selection of about 26 or 27 different ones. I haven't been back since and I figure with the popularity of the t-maxx and only 6 available frequencies, it would be a joke. If you have been and this wasn't the case, let me know and I am game.

That looks cool jesse, the concept of wheeling in the snow intrigues me. The truck looks good!

Plaidfish,
There's also a track in boca up off of yamato road that used to be open any time, and there was never too many people there. I haven't been in a while, but if mills pond doesn't go well, thats where I'm going to go. I don't remember if it is lit or not, so it might be a daytime only track. I used to go to Monster hobbies and then they closed and moved, and RC hobbies in coral springs is by far the rudest people I have ever met. That place isn't worth the air that occupies it.

most people there are FM now or Spektrum.....SE is THE Shop to go to....my friends and I call it the crack house.....it just sucks all your cash when you walk through the doors....best candy store I've seen in a long time....anyway the sell a package of all the crystal channels for the maxx for like 20 bucks....if you're keeping the stock radio then it would be a good investment.....you shoud go to mills pond saturday early like 12 - 1 and the dirt track is empty...lot of oval guys playing around but the dirt is open....and you don't have to pay if your not racing on saturday......but you have to stop running at 5 when they start...or around 4 when we clear the track up for the race......where in Pompano yuo at......

my truck got a bunch of stuff stolen from yamato rd by some little rich kids a few weeks ago...yes its there MIlls pond has a much better layout though.....and they have lights...yamato doesn't....also another track in Coral springs too ....it's ok they do sundays...I might hit it this sunday as well....I've been 3 times and I think the clay is just toooooo hard...yamato was redone since the last itme I was there as well.....I might head there again sometime....
