I'm gonna take more time on break in this time. It'll probably take me all next week to get it broken in. I think i'll do 5 idle tanks this time :)

I am glad they finally responded and you got your motor. Not trying to make excuses for HB put I think they were not expecting the demand for their product to be so big. I hope you got a good motor this time !:yes:

It kinda sucks that they charged you taxes, but even after that you still got a good price. I think meganitro might of been a little cheaper but they may be located in California too.

Hey , Kwong .... Did you fire up your zilla today start breaking in that motor? I had a great day running mine up and down the street! Well I hope things go better for you with this engine.
 
Kwong,

This time use a heat gun to warm the engine before you start it. That saves a lot of wear on the piston. And get a temp gauge, like the Duratraxx for $24.00.

I think a heat gun may get a little too hot and melt stuff. I would go with a hair dryer. I use my wifes hair dryer and it has an Optima speed setting which get the engine close to 150 degrees. She really gets mad when she sees her hair dryer missing, but who cares. We all know whats more important:fro:
 
Well guys, I received the engine today. Installed it in the savage. Took about 30 minutes. As soon as everything was back on, I ran about a 3/4 tank through. I had some left over 20% blue thunder still in the tank. The idle tank went pretty great once it had about 5-10 minutes of running. Never got over 200 degrees...but it was running REALLY rich.

Anyhoo, I got a good 5-7 tanks more before i'll start driving it. I don't want to get too excited like last time and blow this engine.
 
Kwong, I hate to tell you this, but idleing is a mistake. Here is a quote from the OS website:

"How Do I Break In My R/C Car Engine?
The break in process of model engines, especially R/C car engines has been affected by a wide variety of myths and misconceptions. The main one is that the engine must be run at idle for several tanks' worth of fuel before the model is run. There is nothing farther from the truth! In fact, running the engine at idle for several tanks' worth of fuel will not only insure that your engine won't break in properly, but it could also reduce its overall life!"

The best thing to do is warm it up to 180° F or more, and drive it around at part throttle. Set it rich, but not blubbery rich. Use tape or foil so it stays up around 200. If you don't get it hot enough, the sleeve wont expand enough and the piston will wear out too soon.
 
Well I have news for you, it was running at between 170-200 degrees so it was PLENTY hot.

And last time I tried to just drive it around I blew the engine. It was definitely my fault...but IF I do it again, then it WILL happen again.

I've broken in every engine this way. This's the way I know it, this's the way I do it. And I have yet to have an engine that doesn't run right by idling the tanks.

Look at my novarossi, it's one of the most high performance engines you can get, and I idled 5 tanks on that...guess what? It still runs today, and i'm almost to a gallon or so through it.

Kwong... You are an experience rc engine tuner I don't think the way you broke in the other engine caused it to blow!! I think you just got a defective motor. I have added another step to my break in procedure, I take the motor apart and visually inspect it looking for metal shavings or anything that does not seem right. I n the last year I have found metal shavings in the two motors I purchased. I found metal shavings in this motor (46) I cleaned it out real good , turbo the crankshaft, knifed edged the connecting rod , drilled out the engine block so I could put a larger bore carb in it. And it fires up on the third pull everytime but I think what saved it was me cleaning out the motor.

No actually it was my fault. I was doing 1/2 throttle on the first tank, and full throttle by 2.5 tanks..trust me

Thats interesting, Kwong!! I did almost the same thing except I idle thru the first tank then did half throttle on the second tank slightly rich, watching the temp making sure it did not go over 180 degrees. Then with this rich setting I started running up and down the street going from low throttle to half throttle. At the end of each tank I would lean in the motor 1/8 of a turn after letting it cool down first.
 
Yeah, if I do it any other way than idle tanks, then I won't break in the engine properly..I just get too excited and wanna play NOW..

Anyhoo, I have no doubt that there are ways of breaking in an engine properly just driving around, but idle tanks work best for me.
 
Hmmm hope you have better luck with this engine. I know I haven't broken in engines properly in the past but maybe they were a little tougher than I have given them credit for. I don't remember what each tank got or didn't get but who cares as long as I get at least three to four gallons out of an engine it's all good. hicks I would be really interested to see your maxx run against a comperable savage. I have not really seen a maxx run yet. I know you are loaded with the outlaw. Have you run it against anything similar and how did it compare???

OMG here we go again. Kwong this is too funny. what about your truckzilla against a twin titan or a savage with the twin engine conversion? do you know if your setup is strong enough to go against the twin titan.

Hey now, I never said I could beat a twin titan, or a twin engine savage, if someone had one, i'd sure love to take them on...but I know I can beat a .21 Maxx.

btw, who makes the twin titan? That an OFNA?
