The voice of experience has taught me this.

Yes, me too, as with my big block conversion with my GT... I dont know where to pick the weakest point on my maxx, so i guess we will see what breaks, and i will go from there to try to find something less expensive or easier to replace... I'm not trying to Not take your advice, i just dont know where to start...

I've done the 21 maxx thing as well... pick the axles. Like FE said, they are the easiest to change and cheapest to keep around.

I didn't catch what engine your having clearance problems with. Personally, instead of cutting the cage (which would make it weaker in an already weak location), I'd cut a fin off the engine. Just a thought.

I have a pretzelized savage cage to show you where the weak spot is. Basically, right over the engine (the spot you need to grind). It's a good design everywhere else, but it will crumple there on a bad rear landing like my savage cage did. The front of the cage is still pretty straight and true, but the back of the cage is gone now. Tried bending it back and it snapped. I don't think there is much RCS can do about that spot though. It kind of has to be open or you would have to disassemble the cage any time you want to take the engine out.

Here's the bendable spot:

Here's my repair after breaking it while trying to bend it back:

Nothing like 5/16 steel bar and hose clamps...

With all due respect to RCS, it was a pretty harsh hit and landed from about 6 feet in the air on it's arse from a WOT jump. The engine was protected which is what it's there to do.

Wow, that's one of the worst ones I've seen. Did you have a body on it? Lets not derail his thread too much, but its important to run a body on.

Common, you got the pics yet ::biting nails in anticipation::

Alright, i got my lazy butt up and took some pics... All i need is the throttle/brake linkage and I'm done!!!!!!! Lemme know what you guys think...

Anyone want more pics of different parts so they can see somethin??? Lemme know?

Looks great!

I'm going to knit pick a little. I don't want you to think I'm putting it down in any way. I'm just trying to help with the little details. There are just a few things to look at.

I would use a radio box. Your RX is in the most unprotected spot on the RC.
You may also think about mounting your Fail Safe on the inside edge of the servo rather then the top.

Is your fuel line totally secure? It looks as if during take off or a rear drop its going to slide into the spur gear. You may want to rout them around the other side.

You will want to slide fuel tubing over your antenna tube. Swing it around by hand and make sure its protected anywhere it may come in contact with the cage during a rollover. If you don't, you will spend a lot of time replacing cut antenna wires.

Now go wreck that beast :D

I guess i should order an RPM rx box then huh??? I seriously thought of that... I guess i will... Yes, the fuel tubing is quite secure... I tried to move it around and into the spur gear, but it doesn't get anywhere near it... I will probably move the failsafe now that you mention it...

Anything else?

By the way... anyone know of an extended suburban or other SUV body that would cover the whole thing? I know they run hotter, but i will hack out all of the windows to take care of that...

damn! ...i gota say i never really liked the look of a tmaxx before ...but that thing is super sweet

great job

That silver/blue combo is nice! Now you just need some blue rims to complete it. As for the head clearance, I'd still opt for cutting off a fin or two. Fairly easy and you can buff the cut so it looks clean. You have a lot of wrench time into that puppy! Hope it treats you well.

Scott, I was running a body. Always run a body... or at least 2/3's of a body.

I thought I was the only one who did that lol.

Man that is an awesome build. About how long did it ake you?

I bought a new EXT escalade lid for this thing... Its the only one i could find (i only had 2 choices) that is made for the extended chassis and has an suv type body (more protection for the cage...

Alright, well i tried running it today, to see how it would work.. Well, it didnt... I got the engine going for like 2 mins (and drove it up my driveway), then the engine died when i took off the glow ignitor... Ok, so i raise the idle, switch the plug, play with the tuning a little.. still nothin... Another thing... I find that fuel is appearing at the top of the head around the glow plug, but i dont see a leak or anything!!! I made sure the plug was tight (no washer since it is a turbo plug), and i made sure no threads were stripped or cross-threaded... any ideas?

Bummer! Don't you hate an anti-climactic moment?

I have seen what you describe several times. Its probably something minor, like a cold glow plug. Once I saw it from a too-small muffler that caused excess fuel tank pressure at full throttle, resulting in flooding. Another time it was from old fuel, and every other time it was from the engine being worn out. Is that an older engine? When the piston is marginally loose, it starts OK then dies easily as it warms up. That is due to the sleeve expanding with temperature, causing the compression to drop. First try a hotter plug, then test the engine for proper compression. You should feel some resistance on the compression stroke when rotating the flywheel by hand, even when it is warm.

That's how it always is with me. I work a long time to put it together "correctly" and the maiden voyage always ends up back on the bench. It's just a phase of working out the kinks.

Don't worry bro, you'll figure it out.

make sure the fuel take seals up and builds up pressure. are you running the stock tmaxx fuel tank(the one with the primer). i had a problem with my lid not sealing.

Well, the first time i started it, it went down the drive way and back (with the ignitor on) and i took the ignitor off, and it died... Then it wouldnt start again...

Scott: The engine is pretty much new (just broken in). The exhaust is a THS big block Savage exhaust. I have brand new fuel and a brand new glow plug... And ya know, if i could get to the flywheel with my hands, i would... LOL

Busted: Yeah i know... thats how it works with everything i guess...

Penguin: I am running the Ofna 125cc tank, and it is sealing fine (i put a little grease on the o-ring).

I still have no idea how the fuel ended up on top of the head though... The glow plug isnt leaking... I think it is also losing compression somewhere... I'm gonna look at it today...
