Sounds like a toasted motor.
The ESC will shut down if the motor draws to many amps.
This will explane the heated motor and a grinding sound.

Time to ask Santa for a new one.

it still runs though....if it was toasted would it not?

and how could 10 minutes of runnign toast it?

Thanks for the info Ed..... Just learned something new.

1+1+1=3
Hot motor + grinding noise from the motor + ESC shuts off until the motor cools = Toasted motor.

How it got that way, I have no idea.

its cool, its still grinding, is it ok to run or should i just not bother?

My bicycle has 2 flat tires but I can still ride it.
Does my bicycle still function? Yes.
Is it functioning properly, No.

How did it get that way in 10 minutes?
Well, Driving over broken glass didn't help much did it?

It could be a defect.
You may have gotten water in it from the grass or a puddle, Iron picked up by the magnets from sand, We weren't there so we have no idea.

Its yours and you can do whatever you want to do.
If it were mine, I would not risk damaging my ESC running with a trashed motor but its your call.

grr ok and water could have come from the leaves it cartwheeled into after running down a dirt and gravel hill

what would be a good new motor for me to get?

not too much, and i dont want a crazy amount power to where i can't control it..i dont have too much cash atm...and i dont know what they have in stock cuz i dont know anything good to put in it

i just dismounted the motor and gave it a lil power, it doesn't make the noise when the motor isnt hooked up, i also rolled it without the motor mounted in place, it didnt make it there either, what could it be?

then, as soon as i mounted the motor again it made the grinding noise, i wonder if its from the gears

another thing is that if i dont apply as much pressure from the gear on the motor to the gear it touches(I'm dumb and dunno what they are called) it doesn't make the poppy grindy noise, then when i push harder it does it

i fixed it, i thin the motor fell a lil out of line and made the noise

maybe giving too much stress to the motor and over heating it

check your spur gear (the big one that the pinion gear connected to the motor spins) look for small grains of sand that embed into the plastic....I find that all the time on mine and it sounds horrible...get a tooth pick and pop em out if you see any......the bottom of the chassis is open and can attract dirt easily.....you are better off running it in a fairly clean environment until you get the hang of these things....crashing in dirt can just ruin these things...remember it is a hobby grade RC...that does NOT mean indestructable, just means you can fix it instead of throwing the whole thing in the trash.....

how much does a screw set cost? the heads r getting stripped so the screwdriver gets no grip. maybe a hex head set

I would go with the Reedy Mini Max motor if you are running a brushed setup which it sounds like you are. If you have a bit of cash, there are several good brushless setups out there.

Tom

40 bucks isnt too bad, do you need a soldering iron to install new motors?

To get the proper gap between the pinion and the spur gear, put a strip of plastic from a parts bag between them then rotate the motor into place applying a little pressure to get them to mate. Don't apply a lot of pressure. Tighten down the motor screws and pull the strip of plastic out. It should pull right out and you will have the proper gap between the 2. Check the mesh by rotating the spur with your finger. The spur and pinion should rotate freely. If there is any binding felt, do it over again.

so they arent supposed to go completely together? just so the ends of each tooth barely meet?
