A very simple question for which a simple answer is needed and then some recommendations. I am going to electrify my tricycle by mounting an outrunner to contact the front tire making it a simple friction drive. Issue is that ALL outrunners are 3 phase that needs an ESC and other expensive stuff.

I wish to use only the simplest system that consists of nothing more than 1 the outrunner 2 a twist throttle, 3 a battery pack, 4 a commercial of board charger. Nothing more. The batteries could be 4 12 volt batteries in series ,small motorcycle batteries come to mind, at 10 to 20 amp hour. The charger will be indoors. The batteries will not be removable A simple key switch could be added.

Now my issue. Does a simple 2 wire red/black, +/- outrunner exist? If not the project will be shelved. I will need to buy a commercial e trike. Lots of $s I do not want to spend. The 3 phase motors and wiring are simply more than I want to bother with.

I could use a shafted dc motor and mount a roller to it, but that would mean that the motor would overhang one side. Or I could mount the motor in line with the tire, than use a jack shaft/roller driven by belt. Again more than its worth. So a 2 wire outrunner is the answer. I only need about 20 mph max and a range of 20 miles per charge.

Any motor recommendations by name, model, prices, sources? Commercial conversion kits are also more than I want to deal with not to mention $s.

You need to go scrounge a DC motor out of something. Brushless outrunners are not DC motors and require an electronic speed control to work.

I have seen people use rechargable drill motorsl, speed control and battery for some inventive things in the past. It is likely that with a strong unit, you will get the torque and speed required. I don't know anything about twist throttle hear but the drill will likely give you The rest of what you need including the proper charger. I would LOVE to see the build and finished product with this! PLEASE post a thread! Thanks and good luck!!!!

Hmmm... I should actually clarify here... She you say tricycle, I am seeing a child's tricycle... Is this the case? I am thinking 29 mph and 10 miles in each direction Is a lot for a young child? If not, perhaps another option may be the equipment from a child's electric driven toy car. One they sit and drive in? That would certainly pull a lot more distance and a lot more speed. That should also give you everything you are looking for minis the throttle

I am suggesting something similar to this... It may even get you your throttle. The actual motor demands would certainly depend on size, weight, drive wheel to front wheel ratios etc... So the particular model choice would be up to you.
