Does anyone know what exactly this is? I found it on another forum but nothing was said about it. Looks crazy though!

I have no idea who built it. I had to scale down the picture to be able to post it so its hard to see some of the details.

Basically, it's a mini version of Mazda's rotary engine... or "Wankel" if you want to call it by the inventors name. Rotary motors have less moving parts than the traditional 4 stroke engine. Because there are less moving parts, they can safely rev higher than a piston/valve engine. But, the configuration has a downside... torque, or lack of torque. They're kinda gutless on the low end. Rotary motors are very smooth because you have the rotor spinning in one direction where as in a traditional piston/valve motor, the piston has to go up and down. And, typically, they're lightweight because of their small size. The American RX-7s had a two rotor engine that equalled a total displacement of 1.3 liters. They're a very simple design compared to traditional engines, but Mazda is the only company I've ever heard of that has used and still uses rotary engines. The RX-7s and the new RX-8 have rotary engines.

I know what a rotary engine is, I was just wondering what the Rc car is and/or who makes it! I want one!

If you guys are thinking what I'm thinking......its time to boost. Rotary+boost=Let make another trip to the LHS.

Power to weight ratio. OS makes a rotary, and I thing Graupner does to, problem is, they're for aircraft. Also max rpm is arround 10K and, at least for the aircraft version, it is comparable to a .20 sized 2 stroke (in a 30 sized disp. wankel). not all that effecient IMO.

Ok fine. I guess I'm trying to customize enough things as it is anywayz. It looks like nothing is going to be able to compare to the lightness and high rev'n 2-strokes.

Thanks for the pic RCNitroDude999. I ran it thru photoshop and managed to make out a couple things.

1) the engine is an OS 49PI wankel, found HERE on OS's website.

2) the car is a Kyosho Superten.

3) I found a thread on this subject on another forum related to the RX-7 and wankel engines: HERE , though the thread is pretty old (Jan '02)

4) the clutch appears to be a BellTech special with custom gearing.

HERE is the section of the original page scan that I tweaked. It's a bit easier to make out than the original, but I'm kind of suprised I got it to clear up this much. The file is 1600 pixels wide, but it only 60Kb in filesize.

I think the car in that mag was a special one off project. Pretty cool, but probably didn't perform too good. The OS wankel mill is about $340 on Tower Hobbies

Thanks again RCNitroDude999.

Lots of info you got from blowing up the pic Error. You need some sleep! Must've kept you up a few nights huh.

About 30 minutes. RCNitroDude just sent the pic today, I got it a little while ago. Man, you can find out just about anything, given just a little bit of info.
