So I officially love craigslist I got a savage flux hp today with boxes and bags of parts for 350 bucks with three sets of wheels (can u say "I feel like a kid at christmas" lol) but I had one question everything runs awesome but the guy said he kept breaking tranny gears and bulletproof diffs but he mentioned he puts some kinda grease in em (said it was technically for chains on boats not rc but full size I think he said its called speed grease?) I thought I read somewhere u don't put oil or grease on the gears am I ok or do I need to clean it out before running it hard? Thanks for the advice and if I can figure out how to get pics on here ill post em tomorro:D

+1 on the slipper. You can have all the horsepower in the world, but with a slipper too tight, all it does is snap gear teeth or break axles.

How fun was that standing back flip? New trans fun? :)

I'm not sure that the trans is supposed to run dry I thought I read on here somewhere u never put grease or oil in em tho that's why I was wonderin is it ok I haven't beatin it yet just ran it around at his house to make sure it worked properly I did get two standing backflips outta it tho my grin could be seen from the moon :D lol and its dooin fine ran for 10 minutes or so after that I think his breakage is from his useage tho he has 1800 acres of land which includes a massive field on quarry status with the dirt piles lol but aparently he holds the throttle wide open off thirty foot drops which would break any part I'm sure

But anyways what do you guys run in your trans on these savages any grease or oil or bone dry (his argument was he wouldn't run any metal on metal without it all I know is my smaxx is dry in there and says no oil but gears r plastic) oh and could someone post a link on lipo maintenance for me I've found a few but wana make sure I'm coverin everything as this is my first time wth lipos thanks and sorry for my always long posts lol

I can't speak for the Flux, but for the standard Savy two and three speed the instructions show adding the little tube of HPI grease right to the trans gears. I put a light coating on mine, just to stave off heat and haven't had any issues.

As for the diffs, I have the standard four-gear plastic diffs, not the bullet proof ones, and use silicone diff oil in them, also with no issues...

HTH...

Ok cool thanks for the info he's got it caked in there so ill clean it out some and leave a little bit in there it runs great tho I think he just broke so much because of how and where he ran it so thanks again guys

I put the three speed in my Savage X and the high speed third gear together bone dry and have been running the crap out of it. Haven't had any issues so far I can't see putting grease in the trans the speed at which the gears turn would sling most of it off on the first pass wouldn't it?

Cwal, look at the directions that came with the 3-speed and the high-speed gear option, they both show the little tube of grease being applied to the gears. My 3-speed was originally dry, with no ill wear, but when I upgraded to the X-case and new 3rd gear I did put the grease in it...

I talked to the guy at the lhs here n he said he always does cuz its metal on metal so it mostly just helps to dissipate heat from the gears so def do put it in just don't load it up but u don't have to do it on plastic gears I showed him the truck n apparently I got a killer deal on it and it more built than I even knew the manager in the rc area new the guy by name from the truck lol apparently he has one built the exact same way down to the same diffs and 5mm chassis plates (he told him everything that'd b best for it) so he explained to me what the guy used and why and said it was all top of the line stuff so imma stick with it and beat it to see if these trucks hold up to their rep lol so imma VERY happy new owner of a savage and my first brushless lipo setup ever so ill keep everyone updated on how it does and thanks again everyone (added bonus the gf wants to get in it now to so she stripped the smaxx last night down to the chassis and put the 3.3 in it and cleaned it so well b havin our first bashin session tomorro if this rain clears out n imma try n get some video :D) if nothin else ill try n get pics up I think I've figured it out but well see

Could anyone shoot me a link on how to upload photos from photobucket to here from the moto droid? All my stuffs on my phone and my comps bust so been tryin to figure this out here's what I'm gettin

The biggest reason they say no oil or grease in the transmissions is for the nitro trannies that have a one way bearing in them. They get gooped up and start slipping then you have to pull everything apart and clean it up. The Flux has a direct drive transmission (No OWB) so should not be a problem to have some grease on the gears. I am not sure if there is any in my Flux gearbox or not..have not looked.

My Speed-NT has a 2-spd trans, with one-way bearing, and when I first took it apart, it was packed with grease, though it was a heavy grease. Yet my Savage X 4.6 has nothing in the trans for lube, straight from the factory. I guess if anything, I would say to use a very sticky synthetic grease that won't break down and get runny when it heats up, and just barely coat the gears.

Yea that's essentially how that stuff is so I should b ok plus like I said the lhs guy here said it'd b fine he knows what the guy put in there as he knows the truck well so thanks for the help guys as always 1 more hour n ill b home to take it out and bash it :D
