The fishing line should not break unless it's been kinked. If there are any sharp bends, the line becomes very weak in that spot. I'm speaking more from fishing experience than R/C experience.
 
Personally, I wouldn't use fishing line of any type, but that's me. It's to easy to break, kink... whatever. I'd rather use some type of nylon rope. Or an actual replacement string.

I've had the same rope on my OS 21 RG for 9 gallons. I broke it once, but that was recently after getting the piston/sleeve re-pinched. I cut an inch or so off the frayed end, re-tied a knot and it's been good since.

To bad OS doesn't just sell the rope...
 
There is some extremely tough fishing line out there!!!!! How else do they pull in those damn 1000lb or more fish?!
 
so what's the word on this? I bought a roll of nylon braided rope at lowes and I'm lucky to get my .26 turned over 6 times before it snaps.
 
thanks. lol! Actually, I braided three strands of some lightweight 12 lb fishing line today just for the heck of it. I don't expect it to last long but it worked. My .26 starts REAL easy anyways... it only takes 1 compression for it to get going... litterly, 1 turn. I think if I took 3 of those that I made (stronger line of course) and braided them it would hold up for a reasonable amount of time.
 
Which hole do you squirt the wd-40 in? I want to give this a try...
 
I also just thought of this today while I was doing yardwork. What about weed wacker string? It is not very expensive and it is strong. It mustbe pretty strong and have some resistance being that you can chop down lots of weeds/plants with it.
 
I still don't understand why you just don't use pull starter rope?

Using weedwacker line won't work very well either. As soon as you make a bend/kink in it to tie a knot, it's going to be severly weakened.

well, first of all because it broke to begin with. secondly, because my LHS doens't carry any and I always forget to order some when I do place an order there. Besides, if the original string broke what's to keep it from breaking again? I'm pretty confident in this braiding thing. (however I don't understand what those guys are talking about when they say "braid" two lines, you can't "braid" two lines.) when my lightweight fishing line breaks I'm gonna do up another one like I stated above except with a stronger line. Sure, it's a lot of work for a pullstart line but I believe most times persistance and hard work pays off.
 
How are you guys this willing to try different thing on your pullstart? It was very difficult for me to get mine back in. My dad also then tried after me and unraveled the spring which we then had to leave my car with my neighbor that has been dealing with rc's for years. so, ... How are you guys this willing to try different thing on your pullstart? Is there an easy way that I dont know about? Or is it tricky for you guys also? Thanks

It is tricky and frustrating for the first few times... Then it gets easier... I dont think there is an easier way, except experience...
 
you just get used to it... like .21GT said, experience. I attached my string to the spool then winde the coil around the spool. as I'm holding the wound coil steady around the spool and place it into the body of the pullstart, once you get the end of the coil locked in it's position you jus need to wind the string if you havn't already done it. Personally I do this last. If I could explain this part I would but I just think it would sound confusing.
 
yea, I guess all i takes is experience... I was just saying becuase it was very hard for me to get that thing locked in place, and then once it did, It would always uncoil.

sting or line is only as strong as its weekest joint...i.e.(knot)
