PS3 issues

Hey guys,

Have any of you PS3 owners out there experienced any problems with your consoles? If so would you mind sharing them as well as any solutions that my have worked? Thanks guys.

The damn thing gets hot... I mean really hot. The fans are so loud I can hardly hear the movie I am trying to watch. The controlers are not vibrating either. When the fans are on it seems to degrade the performance of the machine and even cause it to lock up. I have it in a well ventalated area and not sitting on carpet. I don't smoke, and other than normal dust, it is not in a dusty area. There are also issues with compatabilty with older games.

controller shock is gone, they lost that battle in a law suit. All the new systems get hot and the heat is what is causing the other issues you're seeing. If you can find the add on fans get them, is the counsel sitting in a cabinet or in the complete open? Standing or laying down make a difference with the heat?

That stinks... the vibration was cool.

It is sitting in an entertainment center that is open, and in the horizontal position. I have tried both positions and it still gets damn hot.

What are these add on fans you speak of? Do you have them?

Sony won't admit it, but they have the same problem that Microsoft is having with the 360. Chassis is just to damn small to allow enough cooling for all the heat that is generated with the next gen units.

Microsoft has even re-designed their current release of the 360 to included ducting that puts cool air directly onto new over sized heat sinks.

If you are out of warranty, I would open it up and blow off any dust then get an add-on fan like Jet suggested.

You would have thought that Sony would have made sure this didn't happen. After all, they had a year after the 360's release to get it right.

I had heating issues with my 360. I had it on hardwood floors and after about 3 hours of running the floor under the console, as well as the console was hot. So I placed my 360 on a wire mesh basket which elevated it and allowed for air to flow under the system.
And it seems to work just fine now that there is air flow all around it, doesn't seem to get hot after the Long Halo battles.

No never get those. They will kill your unit faster than the heat..
They run off the same electrical supply as your unit and cut its power in half effectively under powering your PS3 and that will cause major problems. I looked into them for my 360 and only got negative feedback about them and how they killed some peoples systems. The most effective way to cool a system would be to lay it horizontally on a laptop cooler. Like the one below.

Really, everyone I know that has them for both the 360 and PS3 said they have never had an issue. The 360 ones by Nyko (?) work well. I don't kow how three 12V fans on very small wattage can take half your power? BTW, I wasn't recommending those for the PS3 as there's several available, it was just a picture I happened to find.

my PS3 has never locked up... not even once. i've had it since launch. i leave it on about 12-18 hours out of the day. it's in an entertainment center... about 4 inches on either side, 6 inches in the rear, and a solid foot of air above it. it's horizontal, as when i had it standing up, it got noisy as all get up, and i could have cooked an egg on it. haha.

all of them get warm / hot, but the crashing you should look into. you have plenty of warranty left, even if you got it the same time i did. you're good for a year on that, so call up sony and talk to 'em.

the controllers are getting revamped here soon. GDC is coming up (game developer's conference), and there's a LOT of good news in the works to be 'announced'... even though we know a lot of it already, lol. what i'm trying to say is... you will have your rumble back! i'm looking forward to it too. it's actually a new technology created by immersion (those guys with the law suit... we're all friends again), and it's called touchsense. apparently it's amazing and blows the previous versions of rumble right out of the water.

ummmm, any other questions, and i would highly reccomend you head over to PS3Forums.com. i'm a member over there with the same name. there's a lot of really helpful people, and if you have any more issues, i'm sure you'd get a lot more opinions. after all... this is an R/C website =P. but... i suppose the sixaxis could be labeled a remote control, hahaha.

anyway... GL. i hope you get everything working and your PS3 in good health.

I have had the PS3 for quite a while now, and never have had any problems. It sits on the floor under the TV (tv is mounted on the wall), and doesn't really get hot, just warm.

I have motorstorm and a few others... forgot already...

That doesn't make sense since they are both powered from the USB port on the PS3.

I do like the laptop cooler idea. I may try it on my 360 since the Nyco sounds like a jet is taking off when it's on.

I believe he is talking about the Nyco Intercooler, that plugs in line with the main power cord. They are notorious for creating the ring of death, and in some instances permanently fused themselves to the 360.

I think this right here is your issue. It's a simple thermodynamic fact; heat radiation. Namely, heat rises. If you stand the PS3 on-end, the heat is going to radiate upwards, through the board, collecting (in theory), like an avalanche.

However, laid on its' "side" (horizontal), the heat will radiate out evenly.

If it's still overheating when laid on it's side, then you may want to invest in a small floor fan at the dollar store that you plug into the wall socket.

Hah okay I exaggerated alittle but from what I've read they steal the power from your unit and ultimately shorten its life. My 360 got the 3 Rings of Death(anyone with a 360 should know what that is) and when I got it back I researched those cooling fans but on all the forums I went to they said they were a waste of money and loud. Thats were I was told of the laptop coolers. I liked that idea alot better so I bought like a 50 dollar unit and it works great for the hotter days of the year and such. I have no personal experience with those style coolers but all I have read about them was negative. And just think if you thought it was loud now, just think about 3 more fans buzzing away. Just my $.02

Just an FYI, to everyone, you can pretty much make your own cooler for like $10-12 bucks using a computer fan and a little ingenuity.
