I have wanted an RC sand rig since I was very young and destroyed my dad's Lunchbox on a trip to the Outer Banks. I have access to a dirt cheap (almost free) used Slash and a beach trip with my dad coming up next month, so I'm going to build a Slash Sand Slinger and let him ruin MY truck this go around.

The plan: Buy my buddy's beat up Slash, refresh it, and turn it into a paddle tired, sand slinging, wheely machine before July 7th when we head to the beach.

Chassis: Slash 2WD beater
ESC: Surpass 90-amp ESC
Motor: Amazon's finest 3650 4300KV
Battery: 3S from my stockpile
Wheels/Tires: Amazon paddle rears and grooved fronts set
Body: JConcepts BAJR or BAJR V2...whatever I can find in stock

The final product will be something similar to the JConcepts marketing Slash. A wannabe Traxxas Funco, if you will. 😆

As soon as I have the chassis in my hands, I'll post some updates. You can follow along as I tear it down, find issues (used Slashes are usually plagued with hidden issues), make repairs, and start converting it into a super sick sand slinging Slash.

Took 6 days longer than expected, but the test subject has arrived! It's a very solid, very good condition (at first glance anyway) classic 2WD Slash that I got at a helluva good deal from a good friend.

I'm home alone this evening and about to dig in. The plan:
  1. Full strip.
  2. Check hinge pin condition and ream a-arms.
  3. Gut trans, clean gears, add red & sticky to diff.
  4. Gut and clean shocks, check if rebuild is necessary, lube, reassemble, then fill.
  5. Go shopping for paddles, body, electronics.

Boy do plans change and boy am I tired....

The bad:
  • All the inner hinge pins are bent.
  • All bearings, slipper pads, motor, and servo are COOKED.
  • One of the drive shafts is completely worn out in the joints.
  • I threw all of the shocks in the trash after finding 4 bents shafts and CA glue holding the body together on one and the cap together on another. The shocks were full plastic, adjustable 105mm Axial shocks on all 4 corners with springs which appear to have come off a toy-grade RC lol.
  • Starting to think my buddy is screwing with me with this dumpster fire of a Slash. 😅
  • I didn't even take the trans apart past the slipper because the diff appears to be the only thing that actually works on this truck and I'm going to leave it alone, for now.
The good:
  • I found an XL-5 HV, Traxxas 2075-X metal gear digital servo, and a brand new Titan 12T in my spares box. I'm going to nuke the Titan with 11.1 volts and see how it likes it. If it stands up and wheelies on paddles, I may rock it for the beach trip and consider the Amazon brushless gear at a later date.

  • I had some 85mm Gmade Aerations in the spares which will work awesome on the front. I'm going to order some 103s for the rear and the suspension should be sorted.

  • Ordering:
    • Hinge pins
    • Drive shafts
    • Slipper pads
    • Spare spur gear
    • 2 shocks
    • Body
To be continued....

I'm pretty sure I bought an Optima Mid from this same guy!!! He builds kits, throws them off the Empire State building, then sells them cheap, right?
Yeah, mine came in same shape except the diff case was shot too! 🤷‍♀️

I hope we get to see some vids of this thing on the beach once its finished!!! 😎👍

It was most-definitely the same guy! lol

There will be videos! Whether it's a video of it busting a fat wheelie across a dune or me drop kicking the truck into the ocean...that I don't know!

Sounds like an Oscar either way! 🤣

Last night, after signing off, I realized my local Hobbytown had everything I needed with the exception of the body in stock. Picked up the parts this morning and just spend my lunch break wrenching:

  • Installed new Traxxas big bores on the rear
  • Installed a new tall battery hold down to fit my 3S brick
  • Replaced the worn out axle
  • Replaced the bearings in both rear hubs
  • Installed the XL5 HV and my Spektrum receiver.
  • Tested the servo and it seems fine...going to let it ride and keep the 2075X on deck.
  • Tested the Titan I pulled out of my parts bin and it's DOA...not sure why I have what appears to be a brand new but dead motor in my spares. Oh well.
  • Ordered paddle tires and a Chinese 550 12T from Amazon.
I have a solid, functioning slider now. The goal is to test it out this weekend. The local YMCA has a large sand volleyball area just begging to get tickled by the Tongue Twister.

Started wrenching at 5AM to try and finish it up before starting work for the day.

We have the meats! …and motor!

Funny thing, the tires sold under some gibberish brand name on the Zon are actually Rlaarlo branded.

The Chinese Titan knockoff screams on 3S. I haven’t put the truck on the ground yet because it was so early but I have high hopes!

While in the garage, I confirmed I do have trans bearings. We’ll take it for a test rip later to determine whether I’m going to refresh the trans before the beach trip, or not.

How much runtime you getting outta that XL-5 HV?
I ran for about 10-15 minutes and used up about 50% of my 5500mah 3S pack.

For crawling with the XL5 HV , I used to get about an hour on a tiny drone 3S when I ran it in my SCX10.

Back home from the long weekend trip. Had an amazing time with my family and my dad, even without the Slash lol.

In all honesty, between the crazy wind every day of the trip and us being so busy, there wasn't a good opportunity to let the Slash rip anyway. SO...there is a beach on the bay an hour away from my house. I'm going to head out there soon for fishing and, while I'm there, get some sweet footage of me cookin the chinese Titan on 3S while throwing roosters of sand.

Still haven't made it to the sand but I did put the stock tires on and take it to a concrete skate park where I ran it on 2S... holy crap I forgot how much fun and how tough a stock [slow] Slash could be!

No pics or vids but there definitely will be next time I go!
