i bought and built a hpi kit it was a truggy with an 18ss engine , the weather has finealy picked up and I'm ready to race the engine has sort of been run in ish

anyway when i rev it i have to hold it on full revs untill the engine revs to say half or three quaters revs then it finaly starts to move, this seems very strange to me please help me!!! is it the slipper clutch? iv been told that iv put the clutch shoes in back to front? but I'm sure that i havent !
if i pick the truck off the ground and rev it the wheels do move pretty soon at say a quater revs much more like it should be.
I'm raceing on sunday for the first time and i have my only day off tomorrow so any help will be greatly apprieciated as i can fix it tomorrow. many many thanks in advance

This problem sounds identical to the one you had with the RS4...perhaps you did the same thing wrong on this kit that you did on the other one.

Have you checked the things discussed in that thread on this truggy?

how can people be so sure its the clutch shoes? the car does move at high revs are u sure cos its loads of work to get to the clutch shoes?

no its not, just disconnect the engine and take off everything. Takes 5 minutes. Get to your clutch shoe and lightly sand it.

If the slipper was that loose, it would rev like it had no load. I would think easing the throttle up would let it bite, if that were the case. Sounds like a clutch to me.

Your clutch shoes should look like this if you are using standard shoes. THis is from a Savage but still the idea on how it should be is what is shown.

ok they dont look like that, they dont meet to look like a complete circle i have to admit they didnt go in very easy really really hard to get the spring things in

The direction of the shoes is what I am pointing you towards.

i have to be honest i think my shoes do face like that I'm sure u are all right thou i will dismatle ithem tomorrow and have a look hey u can't all be wrong can u!!!

That is a possibility, but until you prove it...it is the best idea we have. If the shoes are on properly, then scuff them up as mentioned above. From there, you need to check a couple of other things...like...perhaps you got oil on the inside of the clutch bell by accident...

ok when i take it apart tomorrow ill take a couple of pics and post them
whenu say scuff them up can u be more specific how much and how?

Some scotch brite will be fine. Something fine not to where you will eat up the shoes.

While you have the clutchbell off, you might as well clean the inside surface of the clutchbell to make certain there is no oil or grease on it. A little dish soap and warm water should do the trick.

The clutch bell works off of friction between the clutch shoes and the inside surface of the clutchbell...anything that makes that contact slippery defeats the purpose of the clutchshoes and clutchbell.

The scuffing will add some friction...the clean surface will guarantee that there isn't any oil/grease causing the clutch shoes to slip.

I also think it's something with the shoes or springs. I have a question...What type of HPI truggy uses a .18?

The only thing I can think of is the HPI Nitro MT2. It came with an 18SS mill but its not a truggy. Its a 1/10th Stadium truck size with 4wd. Cool ST but not a truggy.

thats rights its a mt2, ok the clutch shoes were facing the right way but the inside of the the clutch bell was oily so i cleaned that.
now the clutch shoes springs are really stiff so i forced the out a bit so the shoes could move slightly easier was that smart or not?
any way when i started it up the wheels started moving on there own? anyway after i run the engine in i went about tuneing the engine and now its running perfect my only complaint is the stock servos which go about turning the wheels sooooooooo slowly but ill have to sort that out by investing in something a bit more powerful.
id like to thank people who helped:)
oh yeah was it stupid to stretch the springs or not?

Probably not the brightest idea regarding the springs and probably the primary reason the wheels started up right away. If you are happy with the engagement of the clutch, leave it be...otherwise, think about replacing the springs on the clutch shoes.

You'd be surprised at how easily 30,000-45,000rpms will open those shoes right up even though you can't with a pry bar and superman strength.

At any rate, glad we got the issue solved. Good luck with your RC...and make sure to shop around both here at RCNT for info on solid steering and throttle servos...as well as on the web for the best prices on those servos.
