Ok i noticed even on the stock pull start unit before it broke on my second tank of breakin, it did not seal up tight against the back of the block, and the traxxas unit doesn't either. is this an issue? how do i fix this. the screws holding the backplate in are tight but the heads stick out a touch and it looks like they are what cause the pull start housing to not seal up properly.

Any ideas?
Heres a pic, and i know about the screw under M. just need to find a shorter one. (i find it funny that one of the 4 included screws is too long to mount the engine on its own mount.) I'm just in breaking right now so I'm not running it hard or anything, pretty sure i can find a shorter on in the tool box if i start digging.

May have been made in mind to use stupid phillips button heads. You could try and just use 2mm button head screws. Or, just take the screws you have and bump them on a dremel to make the head thinner. That's what I'd probably do. Should leave enough head for the wrench to get a decent bite.

Looks like your front engine mount screw needs tightened as well. You may want to put a few washers under it or get a shorter screw for that too. ;)

yeah i just gotta put in a shorter one, fully aware of that one. mentioned it above.

when you say bump the heads you mean the ones behind the pull start holding the backplate in? that seems funny to me as they are the stockers and the picco unit had the same gapping there. is this gap begging for a bad bearing? or can i make a gasket?

Well, I went a more hack route once. I was using a starter housing off one engine on another, completely different manufacturer, but I got tired of the pull-start rope pulling out of the original.

I put enough washers on each screw that held the starter on so I could tighten down the housing bolts good and tight without pinching anything. Then I just ran a bead of RTV around the perimeter of the housing where the gap was. I made sure to clean all contact points really well with DA before putting the RTV on, so it would have a better chance of sticking. Ran the engine like that for quite some time.

You really do want the seal as as you suggested, it will allow a lot of dirt in and chew up your OWB pretty quick otherwise.

I just meant to grind the heads down on the screws you have with a dremel.
