I've got AT&T and my phone which i really like is having battery life issues (unplug it at 740 in the morning and sometimes its dead before 1100). Its a Garmin Nuvifone G60, the one with the GPS built in. I like the setup because its all touchscreen.

I am a texting fool, i HATE talking on the phone.

Id love to find a phone that is setup like this one is.

Touchscreen is not mandatory but keeping the text conversation from each person seperate is. Ie if I'm texting 2 people i dont want the conversations to be jumbled together and i have to scroll around to find the other message. My phone keeps each contact in its own conversation so i just find the name and touch it and it bring the conversation back up which is also kept in order.

I think my contract is about to end so I'm looking for something fairly cheap, i dont want a droid or iphone, as I'm probably not staying with at&t which means no contract, no cheap phone. Most of the reviews i read all say the phone locks up and this and that. The only issue I've had with my Garmin is the battery (which i have replaced and it still does the same thing).

Any suggestions out there?

you can't beet a blackberry very easy imo. The keyboard is the best there is. I've loved all mine. The Torch is a awesome phone. I'm not using one at the moment but still love them. All I do is text, I HATE talking on the phone too, text and email is for me. As far as switching company's thats all up to you but I went to att from vorizon, got 300 more minutes a month, and unlimited data plus several other things for $65 a month cheaper than what I was paying at verizon...Better service too...

I know I'm going against your iPhone request, but the iPhone does everything that you're looking for. It's a full touch screen. The new retina display looks awesome. It keeps all your texts in conversation format so you can keep up easily with each one. It has a built-in GPS transponder. Though it doesn't come with GPS software included, there are a few free turn-by-turn programs out there that are pretty good. Plus you can buy very good ones from makers like Tom Tom. It has widespread software support. The big downsides are the expense of the phone and the extra $30 a month for data.

Droids are also good choices in that there are a lot to choose from. A lot of apps for every occasion. A lot have GPS and many come with free GPS software included.

For the sake of transparency, I currently use and iPhone 4 and I love it.

My only issue with those phones is I'm gonna have to pay full price because I'm not going to extend the contract. And if i do the phone wont be any good to me after that.

You should get the Samsung Intensity II it does what you want. It is an internal setting to set up for text messaging. It is on Verizon I do not know if it is any where else. It is also NOT a smart phone so no data package required but you can add one if you want it does have a web brewser in it. It is not a touch screen but has a slide out key board.

Android is where it's at, in fact Android just topped RIM (blackberry) to be the number one device (apple is 3rd). Check out these two phones:

HTC Merge - will be released tomorrow.

DROID Incredible 2 - head over to AmazonWireless.com and get the phone for $80 with a 2yr plan with Verizon!

You won't be disappointed. Don't want a contract? Find the phone on craigslist or ebay and you'll be golden.

While I like some things about Android, it still has some growing pains even now. Their issue is fragmentation, or having to support multiple versions of the OS (some vendor specific) on tons of different hardware platforms.

This is where the iPhone shines. When it ships to you, you have one choice of OS, and one hardware platform choice (if you buy new at least). This means they have a consistency across the board, making it much easier to make things "just work" when you launch an app or a function.

Windows Mobile - Just say no, period.

We have to support all three where I work, so I currently have a device on all three platforms in my possession in case I have to do any testing. I would score them

Iphone
Android (second, but not by much)
Windows Mobile (way behind the other two)

We don't support Blackberry's anymore, so I can't comment on their newer devices.

I 2nd buying used as a good idea. I bought my Captivate (android) off ebay in mint condition for like $230 or so. Then sold my Torch, which I got for $200 with contract, for $430 :hehe: worked out nice except that I miss the Torch a bunch.

While i understand that different manufacturers have specific Droid OS's, evidenced by different copy/paste functions across different droid devices. Having a droidx has formed my opinion of android in general, being locked into this horrid excuse for a smartphone doesn't help. I miss my iPhone but don't miss att.

The fragmentation is being addressed on the Android phones. Google released some information on that a few days ago.

As far as iPhone and iOS, they also have problems in that the older phones can't run the newer versions of iOS either.

Have had all 4 versions of the iPhone, and the iPhone 4 is by FAR the best.

What makes the 4 better than the 3gs? I have read about them a little but with the exception of face talk (not impessed) I don't see much difference.

It takes about half the time to load, front and rear cameras. Shoots hd pic and vid. The retina screen is 10x clearer than any previous. The shape is more comfortable to me.

The iPhone 4 has a faster processor (the A4) and a bit better battery life in addition to what alpine said.

Couple friends have droids and they have all had numerous ones to replace the ones that f'ed up. not gonna be a droid user as of yet :)
