Now I know one of the gurus here has got an easy way to paint real looking lightning bolts....spill it?

Decals are your friend...lol, j/k. What I do when I want a pattern I can't find is, buy a sheet of masking (all blank, no cut outs or anything) Then find the design on the internet, resize it w/ paint, then put the mask in the printer, then print straight onto the mask, then cut it out. That's what I did for the flames on this:

Sorry, only pic I have of that body.

lol, I was about to add to mine, that I'm not saying I'm a guru, that's just what I did...

well I can see that working for flames, but I got an airbrush and I'm dying to try an effect...it looks like lightning would be easy but before I go trash something...actually just waste time cause i'll be practicing on some acrylic sheets I have.....I wanted to know if there was a cool trick to use,,,I don't see lightning being done w/ a stencil...it wouldn't look organic that way more like a cartoon...I want realism

Plaid,
I havent done lightning yet, but i'm thinking about it too.
I have heard of folks using a white or silver paint pen narrow tip for the lightning, then misting around it with white or silver from an airbrush for the glow effect.

Any of you guru's use that approach?

Too bad you only use the carbon fiber one, lol. :D

Hey now... I like to master one technique, before moving to another... lol
Where's your CF??? Rivot boy...

Opaque paint pen. Simple as that. I just freehand the bolts. Then I mist behind them with whatever color I want. I think it looks pretty good and saves the hassle of having to hand cut masks to look like it...

I do it the same as candyman.
It's the way to go if you ask me.

that was the exact body that made me want to put em on one of mine.....I just couldn't remember who had it......thanks guys...any recommendations on paint pens?? color you use?? I mean is it just opaque white or is there silver?.....and the article said to sort of mist around the bolts I noticed the different styles of just making a cloud around a bunch of bolts and following the bolts individually....when you do either one do you back it w/ another color...HMMMM look at candymans beetle and the faded area around the bolts then you have black....did you back the fade w/ a lighter color first then coat black??...I'll just have to experiment w/ alot of the techniques in that article

Plaid,
I use a simple white paint pen that I bought at WalMart. On the Beetle, I just drew the bolts. Then misted them with white mixed with a tiny bit of purple and just backed it all in black. It has been one of my favorite paint jobs. But since I sold my Maxx, I sold the beetle to one of our fine outstanding members.

Here is mine I wish I knew about that opaque paint pen :hammer: . Thats sounds like a good and easy way to do it.
