I painted a body las night with rattle cans. (Yell at me later) I was stupid and didn't use a mask.

Last night I woke up and wasn't able to breath. My uvula is about as big around as my thumb and almost as long. Its a bit sore but I have no other issues beside the complications and un-comfort due to its size.

I did a lot of research on the net and believe its from painting. Has anyone else had this happen or heard of this happening?

I know its easy and I left myself wide open for jokes but I'm seriously looking for an answer. The last thing I want to do today is to go sit for hours in the emergency room to have them tell me to wear a mask next time.

well, I've painted with rattle cans before in my garage with the door closed and didn't notice anything severe... maybe slightly lightheaded but that's it.

but better safe than sorry ya know Eddy.

I hear you on being safe.
I have never had this happen before. The worse was a bit of a dry mouth and blowing snot of whatever color the pain was.

Check out the attachment.

After reading a few medical related articles on the Uvula, I came across this passage...

I have seen bacterial infection of the uvula alone; this is very rare, especially compared to the incidence of inflammation of the uvula from Group A streptococcal infection ("strep throat"). If the infection is not caused by Streptococcus, it is probably caused by a Staphylococcus infection. Massive enlargement of the infected uvula can potentially cause respiratory obstruction.

But ordinarily, the uvula remains out of sight, out of mind.

If it doesn't get better by morning, I would see the doc...

Go to the doctor. I can't see how breathing paint fumes can cause that kind of swelling. It looks like a speed punching bag. Bappity bappity.

That has got to be one of the most interesting pictures I have ever seen on this site. I have never had that happen but I have started to float a few times! Hope its nothing too serious.

Holy cow ed, are you serious? Thats a pic of you? Id get into the Doc for sure man. Maybe ya got a allergic reaction or something. I've never seen anything like that. Id be freaking out. Let us know man!

yea man i dont think that has anything to do with the paint.. i would get a check out if it isnt better by the am.. yea you should wear and mask and only in ventelated bla bla bla.. you know how to paint but i dont think that is from huffin fumes.. that being swolen may have been what was causing you to be hard of breathing more so if you sleep on your back..

my fiance (nurse) seems to think its from the paint fumes, harmful irritants could have gotten into your nose and mouth passage that caused irritation. kind of like when you clean a real dirty house and your throat is sore the next day and your sinuses hurt.conditions could have been just right for this. if u can swallow then u can probably wait till the morning try swallowing some milk or something soothing to coat your throat. dont know if that will help the swelling but may calm down the throat. there are also minor emergency clinics that you can go to that cut down the wait time seriously. look online or in the phone book for one. hope u feel better.

Sooo, what did the doc say about the third nut? Hope you are OK Ed.

I've read a few articles on the dangers of painting with the paints we use. There have been a few that I've read about that have suffered significant pulmonary damage and respriatory issues by not wearing a mask. Having a uvula swell like that ain't normal. You might want to have an MD take a peek because if it keeps swelling, you may start to have realllllly bad airway issues. I've always tried to wear a mask. Can't say that I have every time. But when you blow black boogers after a paint session, it's pretty obvious that stuff gets everywhere....

Its close to its normal size today. Thank God!
I do think it was from painting. Last night I used a nasal cleaning solution and was amazed at the amount of paint that came out. It must have been nasal drip with the paint in it that caused it. I will go to the Doc today and get a checkup.

It was a lesson learned and I hope others will read this and think twice before painting without a mask. It was the smallest paint job I ever did.

I did get a paint mask yesterday when I went to the store to get my turkey fryer. 50.00 for a good ASOSafety Respirator is a bargain

Good to hear you're OK Ed. I bought a similarly priced AO respirator when I started painting. It looks goofy as hell and my neighbors give me wierd looks when they walk by but it does it's job very well.

hey better to look goofy then have rainbow bugers.. glad to see your ok eddy.. maby now you will quit huffin that stuff.

Better to have the neighbors look at the mask then a Uvula thats bigger then their peepee!

A lesson learned. Now if I could just stop running with scissors.

Glad to hear your ok Eddy, I have had some swelling before in my throat from painting with out a mask but nothing like that!!! Dont worry the colored snot will go away lol

Yeah ed buy a mask,My grandfather has perm lung damage and a disease from painting without a mask,I can't remeber his disease he got from it but it's extremlly fatal if he paint's without a mask,Can you spit the rainbow?

I like my respirator. I sound like Darth Vader when I'm wearing it.....

Have you tried busting out the lightsaber and playing star wars yet?

I've got a whole basement full of every kind of safety equipment you can imagine, my father is an industrial hygenist, so masks and goggles are a must around here.....
