I am running an OS .18 CV-r with the side exhaust and rotor carb. I was wondering if anyone has a good needle setting for this motor? I am running at 1 and 1/4 turns out in my T-maxx. If I close it any more it will stall out when shifting to 2nd gear, but I am still running rich and have fuel spraying out of the exhaust.

I found this on another forum and the guy that had the same problem as you never came back and posted that he had problems with this so these appear to be correct needle settings. Heres what the other forum said....

"Here's what the manual says. Hope this helps you out. Keep us posted...

High Speed Needle: 2 turns OUT from closed position.
Low Speed Needle:
Rotate the screw until the head is flush with the carb body. Then turn the screw IN exactly 1/2 turn."

Yeah those are the factory setting for break in, I am trying to tune mine after the break in

Then check your exhaust system, fuel tank, fuel lines and other related items for leaks. If your exhaust is leaking you'll definetly have cutting out issues.
There is really no ideal setting for any engine. It was set at the factory but you still have to tune it for the conditions. 1-1/4 turns in is lean, and that's probably why it cuts out in 2nd gear. It's foolish to keep turning the needle in and expecting results, crank that thing out past 2 turns and try again.

What's the temperature outside?

2 turns out is factory I am 1 1/4 out so I am only 3/4 of a turn from factory and from what I was reading in the manual after each tank you should lean it out 30% that is why I think 1 1/4 it to rich but maybe I am wrong. My temps out side have been on the colder side I line in Denver

YUP, right there it is! Colder temps need more fuel. I'll bet if it's 35 out the 2 turns isn't even enough. Os should not be telling people that, I remember that from my 18tm.
I don't know exactly how cold it is in Denver but at 50° or less you should be wrapping the head with something to help the engine warm up. It should easily be 1/2 a turn out from what you'd be running it at in warm weather.

The needle settings are a guide to get you started, they are by no means a rule to live by.....you have to let the engine tell you if it's tuned properly.

Ok so I swapped out the pipe today, seems to be a little better but it is kind of cold again so I can't really tune it much. Runs quieter also.

Here is the other reason I think I am running too rich this was a full tank and after only 5 min of warming up I used over half a tank of fuel. I never went that fast in my 3.3. I think I am going to go back to my 3.3 I have not noticed a difference in the performance and the 18 is just sucking the gas down and blowing it out the pipe

Yeah 15 minutes is pushing it. You can't judge your tune by how much fuel the engine uses.

Could it be an issue with the header? I have that extended on to put the pipe in the rear but just started wondering if that could be part of the problem

I will try, I took out the 18 and put my 3.3 back in for a bit
