Hey guys, I've got a few friends that wanna get into rc but dont wanna jump in at $500 give or take. Any suggestions on a cheaper but descent starter M/T.

traxxas slash is a good place to start. they take a beating and are very simple.

I don't think a slash is considered a M/T??? A Stampede would get my vote for a starter truck.

The thing is do they want 2 wheel drive or 4w drive , this would be good info to get the proper advice JMO

The biggest problem with starting off with a Pede is that if you drop 300 bucks on a Pede (I'm saying 300 since you are posting in the nitro forum I'm assuming you are referring to nitro MTs) they arent gonna get the same feel for it as a $465 Savage X for example. The Nitro Pede is 2WD for one thing and not nearly as durable as the savage. Id say in for a penny in for a pound and buy the better stuff. If there really not sure then let em play with yours some more.

I have been very impressed with Losi's customer service, my LST XXL came with a dead servo and leaky shock when I called them it was no questions asked and they sent replacements out. After I had it for over a month my pull start broke and again I called and they sent a new starter out no problem. I am also blown away by the durability of the LST, I hit a curb @ 46mph and all it did was bounce off. It has had numerous high speed tumbles and cartwheels and all I've broken is one shock shaft after hitting a metal pole at a playground.I know the LST is almost $700 so it's out of their price range but the Aftershock is set up on the same chassis design and is only $400. The Aftershock is also easily converted into a LST XXL, you can get the parts needed from ebay for real cheap. I don't think there are any "quality" 4x4 MTs out there for under $400, unless they go used.

I dont like them playin with my truck, i like to drive it the way i do and not brake things. Like for example full throttle in the air and landing, then i get stuck with the repair bill and time to fix it. i also understand what ur all sayin though. And used is tuff cause unless its local u can't really test it out or even hear it run. Dont know, guess they will just have to take the plunge. Maybe i will look into the hpi bullet mt but there so new.

Lol I hear ya there Bkyd....The rest of it holds true though.....save the extra 165 bucks and get the savage...otherwise at some point theyre just gonna end up spending it anyway if they get into it and if they dont a Savy will sell better than a Pede

Horizon Hobby has primo customer support on all their stuff if its still under warranty....and once in awhile even when its not. :)

I have a traxxas rustler and I'm very pleased. initial cost was 300.00 bucks.

If they go cheap on the initial purchase, they are going to be very unhappy, get frustrated, and quit on a cheap rig. I've seen dozens of people quit rc because of this.

thing is if ur budget is SFA you should stick with the basic electric kits. there basic and hard to go wrong with. if you break one of the 3 parts on em there cheap to replace. when the time comes they have another $500+ to spend they will have more experience and know-how to work on the more advanced rigs.

just stay away from cheap no-name brands.

There have been some great points made here so I don't have much to add here. I want to stress what Alpine said... If they cheap out, the will end up being very unhappy and frustrated. Also like Revo 5309 said stay away from no name brands. One thing I will add, is if you have a local hobby shop, try to get hooked up with a brand that they stock parts for. Since my shop closed, I have to order everything online.... and having to wait a week for a $2.50 part stinks. Traxxas rigs are great rigs and if you stay on the electric side it is not as expensive as nitro and you will be getting a tough rig that will last, has an aftermarket support that is rivaled by no one, and parts are cheap an easy to find. In fact at one point Pep Boys sold traxxas stuff!

Well as far as local hobby shop thats kinda out of the question, my LHS is at minimum an hour away and they dont know much but have a bunch of parts for traxxas and hpi. For the price of gas i will wait the 2-3 days to get it in the mail from Ebay. Ya so I'm gonna tell them that i think they should go big or go home. And hope the dont get a lemon cause i will never hear the end of it.

That's the i would do it , i run traxxas with a lot of mods and it goes like a rape ape good parts support from local shop and flee bay
