Oil in your diff case

I keep reading about people putting oil instead of grease inthere diffeerentials but on my ultra mbx there's no bottom to the diff it's just covered by the chassis plate. How would the oil stay in? Also I just screwed up my rear diff is there an upgrade for that or just the standard replacement?

that is just a case for the diff. take that apart and there should be a barrel shaped thing inside with a gear and 2 drive cups that is the diff. they put oil in there not in the case.

well I can see the ring and pinion wouldn't that be the diff?

yeah thats the diff but they change the oil inside of that. it comes apart and there are aobut 15 parts total including gears, washers. that is where the oil goes

Thx, I have some chipped teeth on my ring and pinion I'm wondering if I should replace those or just replace the whole thing. It appears replacing the whole thing is only 15 bucks so maybe that answers my question.

Yikes... hvat kind of diff are you talking about ??

The ring gear alone for my Inferno is $36. Housing $6 and internals approx. $15.

So I'm paying 55-60 bucks for a complete diff. Luckily they don't explode all together, but I have also recently ripped my ring gear and thats pricy.

Although I just bought a complete differential including case and gears off ebay for 17 shipped.

I also order the parts from NitroHouse to fix my old one for ~$24. Nitrohouse delivers fast and I lack patience.

I'm rebuilding my diff but the kit for the spider gears (they call them silver bevel set) comes with 4 washer my old one doesn't have these. Any thoughts???? I'm probably going to leave them out unless someone knows what they're for. Its an ofna ultra mbx.

changed my mind and put the washers on the shafts between the 4 gears and the housing.

My guess on your washers, is to set proper gear mesh. If you don't have slop, don't use them. If you have slop, put them in accordingly to get the best gear mesh. Your wallet will thank you. To much slop strips gears fast.

Thx, I kinda thought so -- so I put them in. Anybody ever silicone between the case halves? I planning on putting a little silicone between the case and chassis to keep the dirt out mine was pretty loaded with dirt mixed in with the grease. Which reminds me should I grease the ring gear? If so with what?

If it's exposed to dirt, nothing, as the grease will attract more dirt... If you can seal it, use some grease on it. It will eventually fling off, just keep an eye on it.

well it originally had this blue green stringy stuff smooshed around in there. Not a whole lot though.

I am wondering if I shoulda used heavier oil than 10k in the rear tho.

wow 10 k in the rear??? poop i run 1k rear in my pcr.. 5f 7c 1r.. what are you running in your front and center

Just standard grease for now.
