What oil content is best for use in nitro cars? (I'm running a mach 427 in an LST2, using it mainly for bashing)

The other day I bought 5L of gas with 20% oil from my local LHS and i told them it was for my truck, but I'm now worried after reading some articles that this might be too much?

ummm.... are you 100% sure that the 20% isn't the nitro content?? that seems like its kind of high

Well up here in Canada I run XP fuels 20% nitro with 20% oil...Each engine is different .. mine requires no less than 16% according to XTM ( I have a XTM .247 ) .. But up where I am we dont have 16% oil so I run the 20% . I dont think it will hurt anything. It will just have excess oil coming out the exhaust .

I maybe wrong... but having to much oil can't be a bad thing. As long as your motor heats up to the proper temp then you should be good. The only thing that can be bad about having to much oil is that you will get it all over your truck.

Yeah I'm 100% sure 20% is the oil content, it says it quite clearly on the bottle 15% nitro 20% castor oil.

I also would have thought that running a high oil content wouldnt be a bad thing, but after reading this... http://www.rchobbies.org/understanding_fuel.htm
I'm not so sure.

Bump it up to 20% nitro. I run trinity Monster horsepower 20% an I believe its 12% oil content.
With 20% nitro youll get better performance and should be easier to tune.

the only thing you will get with more oil is less performance since there is less ethanol I believe to burn

I've had trouble with BB engines running more than 12% oil. They just wouldn't run right. At least my OS 21 RG's and my Omega 21 comp wouldn't. They ran, just poorly.

My SB OS 15 CV-R ran fine on 16% oil, but not the TRX2.5.

I use trinity MHP which has 20% nitro/12% oil and it works pretty good all around for a basher.

Seems like more nitro and less oil is the way to go.

Meanwhile what the bloody hell am I going to do with 5L of 15% nitro with 20% oil? I'm thinking I might get the same brand fuel with more nitro and less oil and mix it together to get a reasonable batch.

Does anyone object to me doing that?

I am pretty sure that plaidfish did or does mix fuel and loves it so I bet you would be OK to do it maybe some 30% to get about 22.5% would be ok

hah, that depends if I can get my hands on some 30%! Believe it or not but some shops that I have gone in don't sell above 10% Western Australia seems to be scared of nitro. *sigh*

Thanks for the advice fellows!

I think that they generally run higher oil and lower nitro in planes but don't quote me on the for sure

I'm running 15% nitro, 18% oil in my aircraft.
Most of the oil content here is synthetic. Some will have a little castor. I didn't think any of the fuels had 100% castor in them.

I use MHP 20% for my cars.

I wouldn't worry much about using what you have. Just have to re-tune a bit when you change.

OIL CONTENT MAKES A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE!

The high oil content was gumming up my one way bearing making it slip and free spin. After pulling out the OWB and cleaning it I ditched the fuel and bought some new fuel 25% nitro, 12% oil and it has made a world of difference.

The OWB no longer slips, the engine no longer overheats and tuning is a breeze! Oh and lets not forget the substantial increase in performance, I'd say its at least 30% quicker now.

So spend a bit extra and buy quality fuel designed for what you are driving, it's more than worth it.
