Hey guys, I found a O.S. 40 LA new, never broken in, for 40 bucks with two props. I looked over the manual, its says to break in you have to

1) Start the engine and, with the throttle fully open,
open the needle-valve an extra half turn (180˚)
from the optimum setting. This will produce a rich
mixture that will result in cooler running. Allow the
engine to run out a full tank on the ground. (Avoid
dusty surroundings.)
2) Now fly the model with the needle-valve re-set 20-
30 degrees open from the optimum setting ( i.e.
40-60˚ from the highest rpm setting ).
3) Close the needle-valve very slightly on successive
flights so that the engine is running on its optimum
needle setting at the fifth or sixth flight.

Having the throttle open on break in doesn't feel right. Can anybody with experience tell me if the manual is correct???
Much thanks.

That's not NOP for plane engines? Thought they threw a prop on it, put it in a stand, then ran it WOT rich for a a few tanks with a cool down between and considered "break-in" done.

I know pretty much every car/truck engine I've owned, the first tank set relatively rich barely reaches dangerous RPM's anyway until the piston seats. Probably different with 4-stroke ringed engines. Doesn't look like that one is either though.

Probably the only way that it will stay running at a very rich setting ,until you start leaning ,then when you do ,you will notice
the RPM get higher ,at that point ,you can use less throttle!...
