I was helping a friend install his new O.S. .21 RG with pull start in his XTM Xterminator yesterday and ran into a problem. The pull start housing diameter is larger than his stock engine and it hits the rear diff output cup. This makes aligning his gear mesh impossible. His engine mounts are adjustable so I shifted the engine as far forward as possible but there is still between 7-8mm of pull start housing contacting the output cup.

Is there a different back plate housing (rotostart/tigerdrive) that has a slimmer profile than the RG pull start housing? Are there different pull starts that will work with the RG? Another possible solution I thought of is grinding the flywheel collet down and using a slim profile clutch bell, and then moving the engine forward again. But I'm not sure if this will give me the 8mm of clearance that is needed.

Hey Sweet D,

I have the RG in my Xterm Pro and I had to shim the mill up just a slight bit to get it to fit right.

Thanks for the advice Tom. My friends RG has the ~4mm shim between the engine mount and the engine. Are these what you are talking about or are they in addition to these shims. Are you using a standard size clutch bell?

I am using a standard clutch bell. I had to add shims to the mount, mine did not come with any. I have the ARR version that you needed to add your own mill and electronics. I have to run home here in a bit and I can tell you exactly what I had to do. It has been two years since I built that particular car. I will go and look at again so I can give you a better description. I can even post pics tonight too if you need them. I believe I had to dremel a bit off of the pull start housing too.

Pics would be great Tom. Thank you for your help!

No problem... I will take some and post tonight.

Well I stopped by the house and took a look at the buggy... and I have the 4 mm shims on the motor mounts and I took the dremel and took out just enough of the pull start case so that the universal would clear it. I don't know if I can get good enough pics to clearly depict the work, but I will try. Thanks
