  1. Bashing
I am an RC newbie. Just got a used slash 2wd with an HPI 15t engine and the stock 8.4v traxxas battery with xl5 esc. I love it. Probably going to bash around with it as is for a while. If you were going to upgrade some basics on it (other than batteries/esc obviously) what would you do first?

Also, what would be a good starter really cheap car for my 3 year old to play with. I got into this hobby for something for me and him to do. He loves trucks and working on things. Gets excited if when I get the slash out. Even if its a wal-mart brand let me know LOL

You should stick with hobby grade RC's for your kid so you can replace parts that get broken.

Traxxas is the go to brand when starting out since they can take a beating.

Take a look at the Rustler, Stampede and of course the Slash. All 3 can be found used for a good price compared to new.

I saw the slash mini... i think its 1/16th... i thought that would be pretty cool for a 3 year old.

The full size Slash might be a better option than the mini because the larger ones are easier to see and are just a bit tougher. The nice thing about the Traxxas electrics is that they have a training mode on their speed controls that limits the top speed.

For your son, I'd recommend the Rustler electric. It's good size to see and is relatively inexpensive even new. They are also tough.

The only thing I am afraid of is that he is only 3... lol... and just turning 3... this is going to be a bday present... so maybe a tyco or something small and really cheap (30bux or so) may be better for now.. then upgrade him when he is 5 or so

If he hasn't played with an rc before, get him a Tyco, or a Radio Shack truck that goes slow, just to get him used to the control. Then work him up. Either that or there are some RCs that have a "newbie switch" that will limit how fast they can go. I've not seen one personally, and I can't remember who makes them, but I've heard they exist. Some of the other guys here might know more about them.
