My son just bought an unpainted Plymouth Cuda Hemi body for his Revo. He showed me a pic of how he wants to paint it. Green with the black roof and black stripe across the trunk.
I think I'm in trouble. (because I'm more excited than him and will want to take over. I KNOW I can do better than him...lol)

I typed in Plymouth cuda hemi in goggle images and that's what popped up. Not being a gear-head I had no idea what it was except the design my son wanted.
Is that a paint scheme that was on Cuda's? (I grew up in the 60's, but it's kind of a purple haze now).
I've been thinking about how to get the stripe. He wants the one big one with a thin one on each side of it. "They" say to paint darks 1st. Would I mask off and paint the stripes 1st then the green or do you think it would be better to do the green and back coat it with white then do the black?

Nope, thats not how a Cuda was painted. They did not have a stripe across the trunk like the Charger R/Ts. They had a few versions, the AAR had a broken stripe down the side with the AAR logo at the back. Or they had a very wide satin black patch on the side toward the rear of the car with the words cuda incorporated at the front of the patch on each side. The Cudas did have a satin black hood though.

Interesting. The decals that came with the body include a black side stripe with HEMI at the back quarter panel and a 440 decal. I assume that was the motor? I think my son has his heart set on the stripe on the trunk as opposed to authenticity. I'll have to talk to him.

Yep, the 440 was the motor, and a bad ass one at that!

And paint what makes you happy, if it's a black stripe on the trunk, so be it. No one says it has to be authentic. I just posted those links so you could see the actual Cuda paint schemes from the factory.

I will be doing a 70 Cuda myself here real soon, should be here today via the man in the long black socks, hopefully, lol. I am doing mine in the sublime green, black hood, and AAR stripe.

someone here is a mopar fan lol

I'm getting ready to do a Cuda as well, but now that I know NC is about to start one, I might not post my pics. His paint puts anything I could ever spray to shame. I thought maybe I would have him with authenticity, till I read above  No but really, that is going to be beautiful body, nitronewb. I'm LOVING the flat black on those cars. I have a 98 Dodge pickup that was Dad's project and I finished it after he died. Everything is painted in flat black completely except for chrome wheels. The door handles and side mirrors as well as a few other items have been shaved (removed). It's bagged and I'm working on a stock floor body drop for it now (basically a tube chassis)

Actually I love muscle cars, just about all of them. My favorite though are Javelins/AMXs, man I love those cars! I would kill for a lexan AMX lid!!!!

Paint that Cuda body Charlie and post the pics, I love the authentic look of a Cuda, the colors, sublime, plum crazy, and yes, even the panther pink one looked pretty cool. A flat black hood is definitely a must, lol. You doing a monster truck one or touring car? I am doing a Parma Cuda for my RS4 3.

So to get back to my earlier question.."I've been thinking about how to get the stripe. He wants the one big one with a thin one on each side of it. "They" say to paint darks 1st. So....the Cuda race is on eh.....Ours is gonna be a bit.The boys rc fund is mighty low. Today was the 1st day of vacation and he already stripped his spur gear.

Any updates on the body situation? You may know this nitronewb, but you can get a 2 liter coke bottle, cut the end off, and cut it down the middle and it makes a great canvas to practice on.

I would mask off the green and spray the black first. It'll save you the step of cover-coating between colors.
I've asked a 1/2 dozen people and got 3 saying black 1st and 3 saying green 1st.
Just for the sake of argument, either way I do it wouldn't I still need to do a white back-coat? Either green, white, black or black, green, white?
No progress yet Charlie. I'm still doing my research on tools and techniques. Lots to learn. I read about the soda bottle. When the time comes my son will want to practice I'm sure.
One more question. Black hood or black roof. Was the black a flat or a gloss? (that's 2 questions)...lol

Black hood, and it's a flat black. Your son may not understand the signifigance (sp) of the flat black and may want to paint it glossy black instead or paint it to match the car. I know a lot of people spray the flat black on the outside because the lexan will make flat black look shiny, but that may not work out good if your son will be bashing the body. If it was my project, I would paint the hood on the inside , black of course, and then paint flat black on the outside. That way, if it scratches it will not show because of the black paint on the inside. You can always clean off the paint thats on the outside when it becomes too scratched up, and paint it again. You might could use a thin coat of pasti-dip like NC Nitro (hope you don't mind me putting your name out there) used on the fender flares in the tuber project.

You can try the plasti dip and if you don't like it, you can just peel it off like you would liquid mask or something. You can buy the spray at a home improvement store or you can order it online in the color that you want.

REMEMBER: I'm no professional RC painter, and everyhting I know came from guys like NC Nitro, Candyman, Lessen, and the others on here who have been so patient with me. You can use what I say as a reference but always take their advice because they actually know what they're doing.

As long as the black is not too thin (transparent) you don't need to covercoat it with white before spraying green. The green behind it will not affect it as long as it's not sprayed too thin. If you are using rattle cans you should not have a problem with this as all.
