I've done the paper test. Problem is I'm not sure how to read it. It has nice smooth crinkles. Not deep v's that require hard pulling to get out. Just nice waves. But that's after the paper stretches out a bit from pulling it out. If I roll the spur gear lightly to help the paper come out it looks like a nice crinkle french fry. No paper tearing and either way i take it out, it holds the crinkle. But it's better looking without pulling the paper out just by hand.

The paper pulled out by hand alone: I can pull on both ends of the strip and try to straighten it out and it does some,but it is still crinkled and you can feel it as well. So from what you can make out of the gibberish above,does it sound ok? The videos I've seen don't give me a clear focus on the paper. Even squirrels vids are hard to tell.
 
My personal opinion is one should never rely on the paper test/method of setting the gear mesh, It tends to be too tight and everyone reads the outcome differently.
All that’s needed is a slight amount of play/lash between the bell and the spur. Hold the bell stationary with 1 finger and rock the spur back and forth with another finger. You should feel a slight amount of play and hear a faint tick/tick/tick sound. Rotate the spur a little at a time and re- check the play at different locations around the spur to make sure there is no binding due to a spur that is not perfectly round (doesn’t happen often but there is always a chance).

You can set the mesh with the paper method if you like, but you will want to check it with the above method to make sure it’s not too tight.
 
I always explain it as: as tight as you can get it while having play all the way around the spur. Snook's description is clearer.:)

Try over tighten it and roll the truck backwards, it should make a funny grinding noise. I normally do that, then back it off slightly, test again, so on and so one till the noise stops, it will do it if u go too far out too. But start with it tight. I make sure it rolls and sounds smooth then do the above check to confirm

I've used the paper trick for years and I take a piece of notepad paper and fold it in half about a half inch wide by maybe 2 inches long. Does the trick for me.
 
Ok. I'm pretty sure it's good. Used all the tips above. Doesn't appear too tight. Doesn't seem too loose. Nice and smooth when rolling. By the way, how do you adjust the mesh up and down? I understand that you can move the engine forw/back for horizontal adj but up and down?
 
not sure on the savage. my revo has a pivoting mount which lets me move it up and down. i can't move it forward and back tho...
 
There is no up and down adjustment on a Savage. Just horizontal and make sure the engine is sitting straight and not cocked to one side.
 
:headscratch: umm...I don't know how to determine that. Sorry, but it's made different than any car I've ever owned and that was decades ago and electric. The paper mesh test is all I'm looking at visibly and it's perfect all the way across. Not heavier or less on one side of the paper. But as far as determining the motor level, how can I do that? I greatly apologize to you guys for the questions.
